GM's Maps #55: Health Centre

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Map making can be time-consuming and sometimes frustrating for GMs, especially GMs with limited time to begin with. In our new 'GM's Maps' range, we will be providing a range of pre-made maps for you to use in your games.

The health centre provides primary and preventative medicine to the community and is often the first contact between a patient and medical services. From coughs and sniffles to minor injuries the health centre deals with the outpatient services that we all need from time to time. It may include dentists, midwives, post and anti-natal care, councillors and opticians as well as having the facilities for medical photography and scanners and it's own pharmacy and dispensary.

The medical centre isn't a fully equipped hospital though and lacks beds, wards or even an emergency room (although it does have a minor injuries unit for those times we cut ourselves on power tools or sprain an ankle).

The map presented here is quite flexible and can be used in almost any modern or near future setting and in most countries. The GM may wish to limit or alter some services offered by the medical centre to take account of local needs or regulations.

Also included are 10 scenario ideas for you to use with the map if you wish. From gang wars and drug robberies to strange, secret experiments or sinister goings on, medical emergencies to outright disasters, the scenario ideas should help to fire your imagination and help you come up with even more of your own interesting ways to incorporate the medical centre into your scenario's and campaign.

Example:

6/. Blood and Buckfast

An ageing vampire is working quietly in a medical centre, helping the community and living on blood bags - he's popular and dedicated to his work. One of his new patients, Mr Helsing, realises what he is and sends his gangster grandkids around. The vampire and his nurses have to survive the night - will the vampire 'out' himself? how will the nurses react? (Concept by Daniel Dunlavey).

I know I've asked this in the past, but is this one of the maps that includes the gridless option?

Hi Thomas, yes there is a version of all 3 floors without a grid. I had a feeling this one might appeal to you :-)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
