Selected Option:

Izirion’s Enchiridion of the West Marches contains everything you need to run your own West Marches game in Fifth Edition or an OSR system, or to create a grimy, player-driven wilderness sandbox suitable for any campaign.

Here, at the end of the road, there lie uncharted wilds, where courage of heart and the spirit of discovery still ring true. Here, beyond the edge of the map, relentless peril may crush the soul of the unworthy, yet it shall stoke the embers of greatness. Here, amidst the ruin and brimstone, awaits the forge of heroes, where legends are tempered in fire and blood.

Welcome to the West Marches.

Izirion’s Enchiridion is a guide and toolbox for running your own games in the campaign style of the West Marches, designed to facilitate a large pool of players that create their own parties and plan their own missions to explore a sprawling, persistent wilderness. As they delve deeper into the Marches, they will uncover ancient mysteries, challenge mighty foes, and blaze the path that will determine their fate.

Inside, you will find rules for wilderness travel and exploration, toolkits for building your own regions and factions, and guidelines for writing and designing complex layers of history.

Izirion's Enchiridion is written with Fifth Edition in mind, but is easily compatible with most OSR systems (the book includes conversion guidelines).

If you're curious, we have the core rules available as a free download here.

Is the Player Quickstart still available to complement the complete PDF?

I'm enjoying the book and getting excited about running this type of campaign. I discovered the Kickstarter page after the Kickstarter ended. Despite the full release here on DTRPG it would be great to have the player-only facing material in a separate PDF. Thanks!

I'm here because of the Edition Wars podcast. I've been hooked hearing about this product and am excited to drive into it for myself.

Is there a way of contacting the authors directly? I can't seem to find a web-page for them.

Thanks for producing a proper West Marches book, and for making the text content available through google docs for free.
After reading the content, I simply had to purchase, regardless of how much I'll be actually using in my own game.

Hoping for a standard color version now that the premium prices have gone up.

And still wondering if the cards will be released here.

Hello! Sorry for the long silence—the PDFs have updated to match the hardcover, meaning that the errors some of you spotted have been fixed. Thank you for your keen eyes and your enduring patience!

Any word on the typos being fixed soon? I'd like to purchase a hardcover, but would rather wait until the missing content is sorted out.

Hi, I love the ruleset from the core document, and went ahead and grabbed the PDF version!
So far, I'm really impressed, but I did notice there are a few sections in the PDF that have the wrong text (when compared to the Google Doc).

For instance, on Page 53 the text of the "External Forces" section is identical to the text of the "Locked Doors" section a page above.
Another example: on Page 22 the text of the "Foraging for Resources" section is identical to the text of the "Fishing" section above it.
In both cases, the actual text of these sections is missing completely (again, only in the PDF -- the free doc has them correct).

Will this be corrected in the PDF version? Spending $15 to get a version of the ruleset which is less complete than the free download is a bit disappointing...

Thanks!

Did this ever get updated or did you hear anything back?

I'm tempted to pick up the physical copy having read the free version available, but don't want to spend that much money if this error is still present

I got in touch with the authors on Twitter, and last I heard they were going to update the version here on DriveThruRPG -- I found a total of 6 different sections that had similar issues to the ones I mentioned in my original post.
However, it's been about two months since that conversation, and the PDF version available here still has the errors (checked as of 9:45 AM PST, 2021-05-06).

I'm still holding out hope, I'm sure they're busy with other things -- I also don't know if the issues have been corrected in the print copy, and the PDF is the outlier here.

Either way, the noted errors are still present in the PDF copy here on DriveThruRPG.

Update to anyone reading this thread in the future -- as of late May 2021, an updated copy of the PDF has been uploaded to DTRPG (IEWM_v1.5.pdf), with the issues I noted above corrected. Big thanks to the authors for their continued work on this awesome ruleset.

Hi! i just got the Pdf+Hardcover version (I already had read the Google Docs, but couldnt pass on the deal), and I have to say the PDF looks awesome.

Would there be a way to see the DM maps you have used for your games (the full marches map). I'm starting to build my own setting and I'd love to have some extra visual references^^

I got this book and scanned it. Loved the art and the sidebars with your insight and design intent. Materials look useful and well edited, I need to take some time to read more and start trying it out. I was also pleasantly surprised to find a fully fledged witch lair with a bunch of tables, factions and interesting personality! A solid purchase, great job.

I haven't purchased the book yet, I'm not sure this is my style of gaming . . . but I'm impressed with your attempt to bring an OSR style of play to 5th Edition, and I'm even more impressed with your "Racism & Colonialism" section in the preview, it's incredibly well-written! Maybe next paycheck I'll swing back here . . .

While I agree that the definition of heroism given in that section is incredibly narrow and off, when reading over your comment here I can’t shake the feeling that you’re coming at this with such vitriol because you’re offended that the book called you a racist. Which, if so, should generally prompt a bit more introspection and a bit less butthurt.

Do I agree that having racial stats in RPGs is racist? Maybe by the name. Orcs and Dwarves and such should be called Species, or something of the like, because the entire point is that they’re not the same species, they’re their own, unique breed. But is it kinda screwy to portray certain peoples in fantasy games as being utterly horrible, having no redeeming qualities, and without a single member who bucked the trend to do good? 100%. Even Nazi Germany had heroic citizens who risked their lives to protect and save Jewish citizens.

So for me, does the section go too far? Yeah, a little, things like Tasha’s Custom Heritage and similar...See more

Thanks for your response Vladius! I'm now convinced that the "Racism & Colonialism" section in this book, and others, is very necessary! And I will be purchasing this book today!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
