Against the Dark Conspiracy

Against the Dark Conspiracy is a supernatural thriller tabletop roleplaying game for 4-6 players. One of them takes the role of Control while the others each play an Operator.

The game is inspired by the mechanics of, among others, Cthulhu Dark (by Graham Walmsley) and settings such as Night's Black Agents (by Ken Hite).

Against the Dark Conspiracy is written to require zero preparation but includes advice to Control on how to prepare or adapt materials published for other games, if that’s an approach they prefer.

All the players cooperate to outline the Operations they’ll be embarking on and collaborate to find out more about the threats and complications they’ll face while having the opportunity to describe an obstacle they'd look cool overcoming.

They may identify people, organisations or items that are important to the Conspiracy or to which it is vulnerable.

They may exploit willing or less willing Conspiracy pawns or innocent and unknowing dupes to help them understand what’s going on.

They’ll have opportunities to define the powers and weaknesses of their supernatural foes and to co-create the monsters they want in their game.

Three different Conspiracies are described in the rules: VampiresDemons and Fae. Each comes with advice on its motives, and how that can influence plot arcs involving them. They also include examples of each Conspiracy's Supernatural Servitors and the Monsters at its heart, as well as details of the kinds of (mostly) mortal pawns they can deploy.

Operators are capable individuals who previously made their living in the world’s overlapping crime and espionage communities. Doing dubious and dangerous things for their country or personal gain has left Operators with few ties to family or friends. The ones that remain are all the more important, which is why their team matters to them. They may not all be the best of friends. They may have complex histories with one another that can be revealed in play, but they all trust one another.

Together that team are making a stand against the Conspiracy; to take it down one corrupt piece at a time. If they don’t, it will catch up with them and anyone they still care about.

The rules include guidance on the Tone of the game and potential Content Warnings, along with suggested Safety Tools aimed at ensuring everyone at the table has a good time.

Access to an Google Sheets 'character keeper' is included to facilitate Online Play.

You can follow the development of the game through to its final playtests, and sessions in which material published for other games has been used to scaffold play in the Against the Dark Conspiracy playlist on my YouTube channel. One of the final playtests is linked below:

What's the overall tone like? Is it tweakable to run similar to Burn and Dust modes from Night's Black Agents?

Pawns are either nameless guards, thugs or paramilitaries or named professional contractors with similar Expertise to player character Operators, and offering a more significant threat. Supernatural Servitors vary with the Conspiracy the table chooses to confront but the illustarive examples provided for the Vampire Conspiracy are Ghouls, Thralls, Shades and Zombies. The mechnics of the game, however, encourage players to work with the GM to create the creatures they want to see by choosing which Powers and Weaknesses (Compulsions, Deterrents and Vulnerabilities) the monsters have. Much easier to end something you understand ...
Hope that's helpful.

Can you do an X-Files-type campaign with this game and have aliens as the big bads?

I'm currently working on a supplement, 'Harnessing the Dark', which will include some new backgrounds and specialisms for Operators along with new areas of Expertise. There's also a new move offering some of them with appropriate Expertise to harness the darkness that empowers the supernaturals at the heart of each Conspiracy. I'm considering whetehr adding a fourth Conspiracy, too ... which might be an Alien Conspiracy if I can get it written in the time line I have in mind.
So it's a case of 'watch this space', at the moment.

Hi Alun I am interested in this, however can you expand? this would allow more x-files type games? Would this supplement have rules for non-human backgrounds for operators (Like say the old computer game nocturne were some of the operators were dhampires, zombies, demons etc)?

Yes - I'm pretty convinced I can get the Alien Conspiracy written up, which would set up the option for an X-files type game in which the Operators confront the machinations. The premise is that Operators are out in the cold with respect to their original employers; to have them still be FBI agents gives them rather too much pull and resource in my view. I'm not inclined to set up non-human PC optinos, though. The orignal pitch for this game was 'Jason Bourne Vampire Hunter', and alien PCs seems a bit of a stretch from that gritty spy genre. That said, the playtests of the Harness the Dark move suggest that it could be used by Control (the GM) to allow Operators to mirror some of the Powers exhibited by Supernaturals. Harness the Dark is deliberateluy written to give the Operator using it narrative control over what it looks like in the fiction, so I've had a player engage the move to mimic the 'Great Speed' Power usually displayed by Vampires in my game. There is a significant cost and risk to Harnessing the...See more

Is there a chance for a single-page version of the game? Those spreads are really nasty ;-)

Sorry the spreads aren't working for you - I'll see what I can do re: a single page pdf ... it feels like it should be easy but this is my first excursion into Affinity so realistically working on it is likely to be next week rather than this.

A single page pdf is now available - you should get an update notification. Sorry it took a while, but other stuff has been occupying me recently.

It's not intended to provide organisation details of cartels or the like. Player characters (Operators) may have a background in crime and there's a short list of exemplar organisations provided, but I encourage players to just Google "organised crime in [country]" if they want others, or inspiration to invent their own. It's meant as a narrative/RP hook as well has having a mechanical impact on the Operator's skill-set so I encourage players to make the organisation they used to be part of fit their character concept, while giving me some hooks to introduce as I need them.
Criminal organisations also provide the Conspiracy with pawns and players can investigate those organisations as they dig into the Conspiracy itself. The rules don't get in to the details of those organisations, though. When I run the game I pick narrative colour from The Sopranos or similar media touch stones as I need them.

Apols I missed this over Xmas. It hasn't been designed for DG, and hasn't been playtested with a Cthulhu Conspiracy. However, given there IS a Cthulhu Conspiracy and it has pawns of various types, I don't see why not. You would need to be careful about scaling any actual mythos creatures ... only some of them would map across to this game's 'Greater Supernaturals' ... now you've set me thinking about a free short supplement, though! 'Against the Tentacular Conspiracy' ...

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
