The Black Wyrm of Brandonsford

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Selected Option:

There's a dragon in the woods.

Those friendly dwarves were the first to go, the poor things. And now the beast has been killing and eating the people of Brandonsford. No-one wants to leave the town's walls. With the humans out of the forest, fairies have taken over, and now the goblin king Hogboon seeks to claim the entire forest as his new kingdom.

The Black Wyrm of Brandonsford is an old-school compatible module for characters level 1-3, in which they visit the colorful inhabitants of Brandonsford, adventure through the fairy-haunted woods outside the town, delve into two dungeon locations, and hopefully, slay a dragon.

The Reviews are in!

"This module packs in a tiny but rich sandbox bursting with creativity and with colorful opportunities for interaction. In my mind, this module should be filed in the same general head-space with Winter's Daughter, the Tomb of the Serpent Kings, Redtooth Ridge, or Gatehouse on Cormac's Crag." - Gundobad Games

"This adventure seems effortless. Effortless. That is a very hard thing to achieve. Most adventures seems forced, or strained. The text, the interactivity, the format, the design, you can tell that they were strained activities. But not this. It just . . . Clicks in a way very few things in life do."Bryce Lynch, TenFootPole

Can anybody tell me how long this adventure runs for, on average?

The book (v2.1) does not provide stats on “fauns”. Maybe we can refer to the stats on “Sheep-Headed Fauns” from *[OSE] The Hole in the Oak*. But perhaps the sheep-headed variety is weaker.

Sheep-Headed Fauns
AC 6 [13], HD 2 (hp 8, 12, 13), Att 1 × butt (1d6), 1 × knife (1d4), THAC0 18 [+1], MV 120' (40'), SV D12 W13 P14 B15 S16 (2), ML 9, AL Chaotic, XP 20

As for the witch, I think she's a lv3 magic-user with two 1st-level spells and one 2nd-level spell.

It was verified that this was a mistake made by the original author when updating from v1.0 to v2.1. The same problem occurs with “The Stone Maiden”.

v1.0 stats:
Fauns – HD: 5 AC: 5 (15) Attacks: 1 headbutt 2d4 Morale: 12
The Stone Maiden – AC: 6 (14) HD: 4+1 Attacks: stone sword 1d8 SV: F4 Morale: 12

This adventure scenario is very cleverly designed, especially suitable as the opening story. The main text is only 17 pages long, and the writing style is concise and neat, making it easy and smooth to play or read. The plot is also solid, with a pure and fresh folklore flavour.

The compact length of the story, with a few strokes to portray a variety of locations and NPCs, is a solid ground for the branching story. But the story can still focus on the "dragon" motif. There is nothing the PCs have to do, only the horrible black wyrm gives enough sense of oppression.

It's written as OSR.
How well would it port to D&D 5E?

Does anyone know if the maps are 5' or 10' per square?

I would've assumed 10' at first, but if the objects illustrated on the map are to scale then 5' would make a lot more sense. I feel like this should be a pretty basic thing for the designer to spell out.

Edit: Room 14's description in the Barrow Mound has "Conical 5’ stones carved to look like soldiers."
These are depicted on the map with a diameter of about half a square, and it would make more sense to have the room to move around them… so I guess 10' it is?

I took that to mean they were 5' tall. On the other hand, the description for location 10 says "There is a 10’ wide ring of small stones on the floor encircling the statue.". According to the map that ring would be at least 2 squares wide, so I think the scale is 1 square = 5'.

A great module! Reviewed it on my blog with a few hints and ideas on how to run it: https://axianspice.blogspot.com/2022/03/about-black-wyrm-of-brandonsford.html

I'm GMing my first ever OSR game using Knave and Tomb of the Serpent Kings. I needed a neighboring town/region for them to return to and found this module. It is exactly what I needed, and I know they're going to have fun exploring Brandonsford!

I wanted to share that it looks like the stats for the Stone Maiden in Room 19 of the Barrow Mound are missing in the v2.1 PDF. I was able to find the stats in the first version PDF, but thought I'd let you know they seem to be missing in the 2.1 version.

I have rarely laughed so hard as running this adventure in Swords & Wizardry. I introduced two magic items from my blog but otherwise left it untouched and ran as a sandbox. Always great to have players scared of their own shadows.

New art and some updated formatting, otherwise the material of the adventure is the same.

It looks like there's also a small typo introduced on page 13 of The_Black_Wyrm_of_Brandonsford_v2.1.pdf.

Could you fix the titles/descriptions for rooms 10 and 11 of Barrow Mound? It looks like they are swapped, confirmed by comparing to the map and by comparing to the original.

This is a great little adventure. Just one question, is the map meant to be used as a players map or strictly DM only? I'm guessing the latter. Thanks.

Great little adventure. Self contained and I would not suggest trying to burn through it in a session as there are lots of layers and opportunities for spin off elements. Also has two uncommon features that make it great. The first is some dangerous monster relative to the low level adventures to make everyone sit up and think. This is then combined with weaknesses or loop holes to exploit (giant is asleep, Dragon has weak.spots and a way to poison it etc). Great job chance. OSR at its best. Only thing I would do is reduce treasure and magical items as it's a bit too generous for my taste.

Would it be realistic to try to run through this in one 4-5 hour session? What would you suggest cutting to fit time if necessary? Want to run it, but would like players to reach some kind of end goal as it's a one off!

I have run this adventure on Knave and took us something about 14 hours of playing (something about three sessions, but I know that other people played it for one session). I wouldn't cut anything from it, as heart of this adventure is being not so big, but very consistent enviroment for players.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
