Dark Dungeons X

Dark Dungeons, the retro-roleplaying game in the style of old-school 1980’s and 1990’s role-playing when rogues were thieves, races were classes, and you could start your adventuring careed exploring a few basic dungeons and end up travelling the planes as a being of pure divine power is back for a tenth anniversary edition!

This new edition is the entire game in a single book, so there is no need to cross- reference between multiple rule books and supplements, and it contains all the rules from both Dark Dungeons and Darker Dungeons, as well as extensive developer commentary explaining which rules were kept from the source material and which were changed (and why).

I'd really like to purchase this in print, but I am more partial to a hardcover version. Any chance of that happening?

In retrospect, and after some thought and after having since uncovered numerous good challengers to the original, I'd prefer to get this item in Hardcover.

Softcover digest sized items of 150 pages or less are ok, but when you pass 300 pages, softcover doesn't cut it for me. Call me fussy, but I hate damaged covers and cracked spines. Which happens to anything 300+ pages.

Not that I need redundancy in designs, but I'm also a collector. Some clones add their own unique flavours I have found.
I'd like to add this to my shelf in hardcover.
But failing that, I'll let my professional printer do me a nice spiral bound copy.

Any chance of getting a hardcover? 400+ page books deserve a hardcover option.

It's a D&D clone. Hope that doesn't surprise anyone :)
Is it ok? Yeah, it's ok.
But the real question is, why?
It's not really different enough from actual D&D.
You might as well be playing actual D&D.
So why not D&D?

I agree :)

In the time since I made my comment, I have discovered several good renditions of old school. Some even better than actual D&D.

That's good to know! I think for the majority of us, it's simply because we prefer the playstyle of old-school D&D, and how very different it is from the modern mainstream juggernaut that is 5E. That and I'd rather not give WOTC any cent, especially after that OGL debacle. Clones are also almost always clearer, cheap (a good chunk are free) and has errata incorporated.

Any chance we can get a PDF with bookmarks? I find that indispensable for quick reference.

Only hardcover options I can find are for Dark Dungeons, not for Dark Dungeons X, Edward. Both here and on lulu.

And I'm not even sure lulu can actually print Dark Dungeons X, even in softcover...

Thanks Jerome C for the heads up. I would love a hard copy. The downside is the hard copies of some POD games tend to fall apart quicker than the soft covers.

One of my games is DDX with a heavy House Ruling from other games.

I added Oriental characters from 3e's setting and the class options provided here from Raven God Games. Ex: My samurai is the Raven God PDF with the Ancestrial Daisho chart of Oriental Adventures from 3e. All charts are converted to DDX's 36 level progression.

Race options are form Advanced Labyrinth Lord and OSE. Also included are Ork (Warhammer) and Damphir from (White Box Gothic). Both are moddeded.

I added the Witch from the OSE halloweeen zine (available hard copy via Exalted Funderal) and the Pirate setting via 3e. (I also prefer the ship combat from here. Sorry Mr. Blackball).

Lots of other changes. I can list them if anyone is interested. Thanks for your indulgence!

I also reverted the Elf and Magick-User back (adding the K makes it feel sinister like Alister Crowley's Magick system). As well as bringing the Monk (Mystic) back from the Original Game and the Dark Dungeons clone. (again, apologies Mr. Blackball).

The hard part is adding weapons. You have to make the skill chart, but that's an easy labor of love.

I use the Equipment Emporium from Basic Fantasy. No changes required. I also use the creature Catalog from D&D 1e along with Basic Fantasy's Field Guide. The Field Guide has some great monster ideas. Everything is converted to DDX.

Running both this and my Savage Worlds games (currently Deadland) and DDX have been easier and offer more variety to my players than 5e or P2e IMHO.

How difficult would it be to add a Race Option to this game? I have been researching Old School Essentials Advanced Fantasy, BX Class builder, and Labyrinth Lord Advanced Edition Companion. All have various rules on separate Race and Class systems for Old Skool BECMI. I'm pondering how to add this option to DDX. Without a bunch of back-end balance issues.

There is one option to purchase a hard copy of this book here on DTRPG. Lulu has an option for a hard copy as well as a Deluxe edition for $89.95. I was wondering if anyone knew anything about the deluxe copy of this book? I can imagine what the hard copy would be like, but what is the "deluxe" part of the deluxe copy?

Really enjoy this work. I run another, very different campaign, but I'm forever with my nose in this book. In regards to "race as class" concept. This is the only issue the guys at my table have with becmi. But I see where Old School Essentials in their Advanced book just quietly takes care of the "race is class" issue by just allowing some races to play as certain classes and lists the ones that are restricted.
Does anyone see a problem with doing that here? How hard would it be to add a race/class system to the already existing system that is here?
Have to say again that this is an awesome system. I have 3 rediculious book shelves with high dollar RPG books on it and this one never gets to the shelf as I always have it close by to pick up whenever I can.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
