Filling in the Blanks

Selected Option:

Filling in the Blanks is a guide to populating hexes with lairs and features to use in fantasy role-playing games. While written specifically for Necrotic Gnome's Old School Essentials it is compatible with virtually all OSR-style games, and can be used with more modern versions of the game with little effort.

It provides tables for randomly generating the number and type of lairs and features that can be found while exploring the wilderness and guidance on how to craft the results into coherent setting details.

An in-depth review of Filling in the Blanks can be found on the Bones of Contention blog.

Note that the print versions of this book have been disabled due to an upcoming Kickstarter (starting in May of 2023) that will be producing a revised edition of this book. The pdf will be automatically updated, free of charge, once the revisions are in.

This book is in revision. I took the POD version down until the new, revised and corrected book comes out. I didn't want anyone to buy it if it will be changed soon. You can still buy the pdf, and it will be automatically updated at no cost when the new version comes out.

The book was written before OSE Advanced was released, so it was for the Basic version. I'll be Kickstarting a new version of FitB this winter with an offset print option that will clean these up and remove page references to the OSE books, especially since there are so many versions of the OSE books.

So the Soft Cover Premium should be of better quality than the Hard Cover Standard? This looks like a book I want to get the best, most lasting copy I can.

I bought the softcover to read, and the PDF to reference. A LOT of helpful tables.

On page 22 there's an incomplete paragraph

"There’s a 1-4 in 6 chance the road follows a nearby
terrain feature. If not, roll 1d6 and use the diagram on p."

I can't recommend this title. $10 for a PDF whose print quality is abysmal. I can't imagine that the POD is much better. Can't speak to the quality of the writing, but the product is junk.

I have found this product really useful for quickly filling out hexes. It does what it says on the tin, I'm not sure why you think it's "junk"? Do you just mean the print quality?

Yes, the print quality. I maybe should have said "the product overall is junk". Terrible image quality. Ten dollars a pop could pay for a lot of...redoing? The image quality is freakin' terrible.

On page 12, is the Possible Structures table supposed to be d10?

Ah, yes. It looks like there was an extra 0 added to the die header. Thanks!

On page 33, last table of the first column is for manmade barriers. The result for 1-40 is Traps, with no page number associated with it. This would only be a minor bother (I'm sure you have a list of these to fix), but there's no entry for traps in the book anywhere in the book, with the only mentions of the word elsewhere therein being in passing for dungeons. Did this somehow get cut?

Actually, this is the first error that has been pointed out! Let me go back through the text and see what my intention was. Thanks for catching it!

I've hit lots of little ones using the book (I was filling a bunch of hexes), but that's the only one where what you meant wasn't clear.

Yes. The print files have been submitted to the printer. I'm hoping to have the print proofs in my hands by end of September. Covid has really slowed the printing end down, unfortunately.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
