The Blight (5e)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

A vast and sorcerous city, poisoned by alchemy, extending its empire through necromantically-powered industries, the City-state of Castorhage is gritty, often-horrific, and heartless. The city-state has begun exploring realms beyond the normal world, heedless of the dangers, and unaware that these other worlds are exploring the city-state in return. Ruthless factions, many of them quite monstrous, wage a hidden war for control of the city, its bizarre “technologies,” and its cruel empire.
Two books in one, The Blight: Richard Pett’s Crooked City is everything you need for a campaign set in Castorhage, the city known to most simply as the Blight. Set in the Lost Lands campaign setting, this book consists of The Blight Campaign Guide — which includes the Cyclopædia Infestarum, a huge collection of new monsters, NPCs, and other resources for the setting as well as a ten-chapter gazetteer to the city’s individual districts — and also includes the Levee Adventure, a nine-part series of adventures that introduce your players to their first taste of the Blight and its rotten and degenerate urban confines.

Bring your players to a truly novel city-setting, where adventures are utterly different than the ordinary fare of traditional fantasy. The Blight: Richard Pett’s Crooked City provides countless hours of adventure for your game and the seeds to endless
campaigns spawning from its grimy, crowded environs.

You’ve just entered the wrong side of town . . .

I'm not allowed to leave a review because I purchased the hardcopy and PDF from FGG directly, so DriveThru doesn't think I'm a purchaser. But I am, so here goes. Currently running this, starting adventure 3/9. There are some things that I LOVE about this book and some that are pretty terrible.

The editing on the page is terrible in parts, with missing spaces or repeated words. It's mostly fine; the problems are usually related to mechanics, so it's clear that this is not the first system to be published on. I feel like someone went through and CTRL+F to replace, say, Pathfinder references to 5e references, and then didn't check to make sure that it did so without error. So, spacing and double words, that sort of thing.

The editing in terms of the organization of the book could also be significantly improved. It's really hard to look up references to things. For example, on page 76 there's a table of pricing for food and drink, but if you want to know about snuff, tobacco, coffee, or...See more

Interesting. I happened to get a phone number for them because I paid for an item on their site through paypal. If you haven't gotten any response yet, message me on here and I'll send it your way. They were very responsive when I called them.

I'm planning to run this in Zweihander RPG, I am more familiar with 5e than Pathfinder. I haven't seen either system have a conversion to Zweihander published by Grim and Perilous or anyone else yet. Which would be the better version to get to do a conversion. Everything I've read about the setting would fit very well in the G&P Zweihander game. Thanks

To be fair I believe it is 900 pages and took a couple of years to write (and that was the Pathfinder/S&W version that then had to be converted). They should probably put that in the description.

What it is it about the 5E edition of The Blight that warrants an Adult-Content Warning, but not for the Pathfinder version? Or was that just an oversight?
It's a fairly vague warning in the description, so I wouldn't mind more specifics. Most violence I can tolerate (this is a game all about it), but if it's overly gratuitous or sexual, I'll take a hard pass...

It's not the violence, but the fact that the city is corrupt and cruel that make it so different. Think of it where no one is altruistic but many pretend to be good, where many people are mad beneath a thin veneer of sanity. The best way I can think of it is 'The Call of Cthulhu' without the Lovecraft mythos though that doesn't fit exactly either. 'Urban Horror' is a good description.

It's an interesting setting.

Thanks for the explanation, Aldrich. I've since picked up other Frog God Games / Lost Lands material, but will pass on this until I've gotten through what I've already, as I think this is darker than what my players are interested in.

Pathfinder version has the same warning.

There are some adventures within the setting that could be disturbing for a younger audience.
I'd imagine anyone 13 or older would already have been exposed to worse content than what is contained within the setting.
Still the warning does show that they acknowledge the campaign is a little darker than say how Ravenloft treats darkness and evil creatures.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
