Alpha Dawn... stage one of the Star Frontiers™ science fiction game system.

A great way to enter the world of science fiction role playing.

These Basic Rules teach you how to create characters, move and fight on the game map, and how to create adventures of your own. The included adventure, Crash on Volturnus, is simple enough for both beginning players and referees.

Stage two... expanded rules and much more!

Picture the world-famous Dungeons & Dragons game. Now imagine this same excitement in a science fiction setting. You'll find our Expanded Rules add that kind of challenge, detail, and opportunity for victory. Don't miss Star Frontiers™ Knight Hawks exciting board game and role-playing expansion rules to Star Frontiers Alpha Dawn game.

Everything you need: This set includes the Basic Rule Book, the Expanded Rule Book, the Crash on Volturnus Adventure Module, printable full-color map, printable counters. Two d10 dice not included.

This game requires no gameboard because the action tales place in the player's imagination with planetary adventures in alien worlds as the main event.

Ideal for 3 or more beginning to intermediate players, ages 10 and up.

Note on the print on demand edition:

This version of the book has all of the elements of the box set into a single volume book.

We (Wizards) recognize that some of the legacy content available on this website does not reflect the values of the Dungeons & Dragons franchise today. Some older content may reflect ethnic, racial, and gender prejudice that were commonplace in American society at that time. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. This content is presented as it was originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed. Dungeons & Dragons teaches that diversity is a strength, and we strive to make our D&D products as welcoming and inclusive as possible. This part of our work will never end.

What does "multiple formats" mean in some of the options?

Hi folks, is the book stapled or perfect bound? I find the later has a very weak spine.

Rules & tables for creatures (herbivore, carnivore and omnivore) not for sapient aliens.

I have purchased both Alpha Dawn and Knight Hawks in hardcover. I received them today and they are the highest quality. I cannot recommend this site, and these books in particular, enough.

So far all my purchases from this site have been top quality.

I encourage all to try Star Frontiers, it is a fantastic SF RPG. I was 10 when I first played and I am thrilled to be able to have it on my shelf again.

Cheers everyone!

Which would be better to get a pod of SF or Frontier Space (clone of SF) pod? I never had Alpha Dawn & neither DwD's Frontier Space have good reviews or book showings on youtube, so haveing trouble deciding which one to get.

FrontierSpace is not a clone (if by 'clone' you mean the relation of Labyrinth Lord to B/X - slight changes, 100% compatible with the modules). FrontierSpace is more like a reimagining of StarFrontiers - aiming for the same feel, but with a robust, modern system underneath. There are no Youssarians, or Fralazites here, but the scope and the feeling of a wild frontier is very much present. It's still a percentile game, but plays better, and the Referee Book has a ton of content to facilitate creating your own worlds, life forms and adventures. I would 100% get FrontierSpace first, and get this (and the great Volturnus modules!) later, if only for inspiration.

Star Frontiers (TSR, Inc.) was an all-in-one boxed set with extensive information on how to design an adventure and how to run a game, and maps, two cheap dice and lots of little half-inch cardboard chits. It was meant to be sold on the mass-market and kids who bought the box stood a decent chance of "getting it" about RPGs. An excellent system integrating melee combat, ranged combat, vehicle combat and aerial combat going on all at once in six-second turns. Expect high-tech weapons to pack more punch than, well, just punching, but you get high-tech armor and energy shields to counter that too. You track a fixed number of hit points but also track packs of energy measured in Standard Energy Units (SEUs).
FrontierSpace (one word, by DWD Studios) follows the company policy of not talking too much about how-to-RPG, it assumes some RPG experience. But the company packs its products with generators for adventure ideas (missions), SF installations (floor plans, layouts, rooms, security), villains,...See more

Question: When it says I can order this in hardcover, does that mean an actual hardcover or like it was in the original box set?

I bought STAR FRONTIERS products since they started out in 1982, and want to tell the world that this is a solid exploration and combat-oriented SF RPG!! A section of space called the Frontier has been settled collaboratively by 4 alien species: Humans, the blob-like Dralasites, the insectoid Vrusk and the simian Yazirians, who have gliding membranes like a flying squirrel.

The rules are outstanding. TSR Inc. had produced a number of boxed games in different genres: the "boxed" version of Dungeons & Dragons but also Gamma World, Gangbusters, Boot Hill and others. They wanted boxes that could be picked up in a bookstore by a kid who had never played RPGs before, and packed enough information in these boxes for the kid to "get it" and know how to run games, and be a game master and spread the hobby to others. The game has two sections on designing adventures and how to run or operate a game as a GM.

Choose a race for your character, and roll percentile dice...See more

It would be nice if they made this game line available for fans to create and release material for it through the Dungeon Masters Guild (http://www.dmsguild.com/index.php). This would give fans a platform to publish their material and also benefit the publisher.

I love Starfrontiers and Am a bit Miffed at Wizards attitude to the free Fan stuff Online in light of the Fact Fans have kept it alive since they effectively dumped, It feels that they are Cashing in on the fans at the expense of the Fans creativity when they should be thanking them for the Work and support. :(

No but a scan of the chits and map is in it. I'm not sure if drive thru is set up for die cut counters like the original product.

Is this a scanned copy that is printed out, or is it an OCR where the pictures are improved over a scan?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
