Convicts & Cthulhu: Muster #1 Un-Statted

"The Turbulent Mason"

The early penal settlements of Australia were filled with colourful (sometimes roguish) characters who lived larger-than-life. Anthony Fenn Kemp, army paymaster, opportunistic entrepreneur, and master mason is a figure that certainly fits this bill. Deftly skirting the edges of the political maelstrom of the colonies, he ultimately became drawn into events due to scandalous pamphlets discoveries in his barracks . . .

C&C Muster #1 is a short supplement which expands upon the Convicts & Cthulhu setting, providing a detailed and three-dimensional backstory and character for Anthony Fenn Kemp -- the Turbulent Mason. This material can be used in a number of different ways: firstly it can allow GMs to drop Kemp into a scenario or campaign, whether as an ally or adversary. Alternatively pieces of his complex and detailed life can serve as inspiration to either players or GMs in designing backstories for other characters. Finally, Kemp can make a fine "drop in" replacement Investigator if one of the players' own characters suffer an unfortunate ... incident ... in the colonies.

C&C Musters are self-contained additions to the Convicts & Cthulhu setting for Lovecraftian roleplaying in the early penal colonies of Australia. The series looks at real-life historical characters from the convict era in New South Wales and Van Diemen’s Land, through the lens of the Cthulhu Mythos. Each considers a historical personage in terms useful in a Convicts & Cthulhu campaign, either as an NPC ally, enemy, or patron–or even as a player character investigator. Evocative and fleshed-out characters assist Gamemasters by triggering possible story seeds, or act as a focal point for connections with other characters such as family or business associates.

This is not a standalone product, but relies upon the Convicts & Cthulhu setting also published by Cthulhu Reborn. The Convicts & Cthulhu core book is a lavishly illustrated 96-page sourcebook available in both PDF and print as a "Pay-What-You-Want" title.

Convicts & Cthulhu is designed to allow Call of Cthulhu Keepers and players to run scenarios and campaigns set in the penal colonies of early Australia. It particularly targets the historical period from 1795 to 1810.

PUBLISHER
Because of some vagaries around the way Chaosium treat things created under their "fan license", we're not allowed to put versions of these files on DTRPG with game stats. Hence these un-statted files.

If you want to get the same content WITH stats, you can grab PDFs direct from the download page of the Cthulhu Reborn blog. There's a whole page dedicated to Convicts & Cthulhu downloadable content. Everything that's here in unstatted form is also there in CoC7e form.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
