It is 710 AD. It is an age of iron and ruin, a wolf-season amid the ashes of Roman Britain. Wolves of God is an old-school-inspired historical fantasy game from the maker of Stars Without Number and Godbound. Set in 710 AD, PCs take up the roles of daring English adventurers: brave Warriors, holy Saints, and sorcerous Galdormen all setting forth to brave the savage wilds of post-Roman Britain. I would love to see a followup of this set a hundred and some years later during the invasion of the Great Heathen Army and the establishment of the Danelaw. A kind of Saxon Chronicles/Last Kingdom supplement.

Mr. Crawford, as much as I love this, and in fact all of your games, I would be over joyed if you ever did a similar project with a Roman theme. I feel the Classical era is an over looked gem in the OSR/D&D style setting and system world.

Mind I don't intend to wait on you. Your various games, especially the new edition of Worlds Without Number, give all the necessaries to put together a project like that on my own, but I would be happy to invest in such an endeavor should you take a notion in that direction.

On page 136 (English Laws and Wergild), I believe that there is a typo in the section about Assault: "...they must pay 120 shillings to the ceorl’s lord and 6 to the householder himself."

Should that instead be 60 shillings to the householder?

As I recall, it was six in the law code I referenced. The big offense was breaking the lord's protection; you owe the ceorl for punching somebody, but you owe the lord for repudiating his rights over violence.

I have been having a blast running this game with a few friends ive just ordered a hard copy. Its easy to run unlike a lot of other RPG games that have too much information and more supplements you need. Ive used alot of local history and legends to make my campaign run mostly centering on the conflict between Wessex and Dumnonia. Its quite funny half my player party are not even Saxons but Celts and foreigners. Are their any rules in game about mounted combat i have looked at the rules but couldn't find any?

Hi, just bought the hardcover + PDF, very nice! But I'm confused by Shock Damage. When I've used Shock Damage rules in other systems it usually degrades or causes a penalty to actions and saves rather than HP loss. In Wolves, is Shock Damage basically applied like normal damage to a character's HP, or is it different?

I am not the author, obviously, but I read it to make that Shock Damage is like regular damage in that it reduces HP.

Hi folks, is this project dead? I can find almost no references to it on the net, or YouTube (2 videos, one from the Kickstarter), no character sheets, in fact there are no references to the game on the publisher's website. The work itself is a departure from the author's previous games - it's digest-size and lacks the volume of GM aids that made earlier releases really stand out. Bit confused.

Matthew S- Have you ever heard of King Arthur Pendragon? It is an excellent role playing system that is completely from the perspective of the Cymric. The Saxons - in line with history - are disliked to hated. I am a GM for that. I think it is all about the perspective the game comes from. There is nothing inherently wrong with that. You either accept it or not for YOURSELF. These are the perils of a historical game, as someone said.

I bought this as I respect Kevin’s work and liked the idea of an RPG for the period. I am Welsh and was aware it was from the Saxon perspective. On reading it I was repulsed. This RPG deals with a period of British history it should have been written from both Saxon and Cymric perspectives. This is the equivalent of a Texas Ranger RPG complete with anti Commanche tone and invective.

The thing is Travis, that it need not have been written like that. The idea of it being a translation of a game written by a Saxon monk has me in stitches. The world creation tools are excellent.

But it has missed the point that Wealh is where the terms Wales and Welsh come from and that the language used to describe the Welsh is absolutely derogatory. If this were an RPG set in say, the Plains Wars, would it stand?

I don't know anything about that historical period, so I can't relate to your concerns. However, I will state that a game set in a historical period is going to have "good guys" and "bad guys." A game set in the Plains Wars would work the same way. It *could* be written as the Native Americans as the heroes or as the settlers / US Gov't etc. as the heroes. Depending on the lens from which one views it, they could both be considered repulsive.

And if you were to read such a Texas Ranger RPG, would you believe the narrator, or would you draw the conclusion that he really hated Comanches and could not be trusted to give them a fair hearing?

The book is explicitly about the English and their lives, nations, and prejudices. They treated the native Britons brutally and with absolutely no reservations about it, and any narrator who pretends otherwise is drastically unrepresentative of his time and place. Any reader who can take in Brother Cornix's invective and take it as a fair, accurate description of the native Britons is unlikely to be enlightened by my spending an equal page count on a Cornish Pelagian fulminating against those never-sufficiently-damned West Saxon barbarians and their filthy ways.

I am somewhat disappointed however; your argument would seem to open the door on an RPG from any tasteless and offensive historical perspective and you seem unconcerned that reiterating old calumnies and insults may still cause offence even today. I think arguing either way is pretty silly. Seeing that the history of post-Roman Briton is pretty much totally unknown. There is no history of the period to speak of. If you don't like this version there are plenty out there that paint all Christians of the period as venal and cruel. The tribalism that has crept into the "civilized" world in the last few decades beggars the imagination. Much of what we "know" about the cultures of sub-Roman Briton is total conjecture. Every tribe has their own take, because there is no evidence to gainsay their versions. This is a game. For the interest of a story there has to be conflict. There has to be bad guys. It's your game. Change the good guys to be the druids. EDIT: I bought the hard back. Thank you Matthew S for helping me make up my mind.

In the previews, there's some problem with the "celtic" text following the large illuminated drop caps. The text in the red "celtic" font lies over the normal black roman font in 2 of the 3 places where the large illuminated drop caps occur in the previews.

Is this just a PDF issue, or does the printed book have the same problem?

Looks like the two auto-generated previews are generating with all PDF layers turned on, instead of leaving the Table of Contents References layer off as it should be. It's not something that shows up in the book or PDF- assuming you leave the layer off.

Any chance of posting an actual preview? Sure it has a table of contents but the rest is vying to overtake KULT's months long 'preview' in lack of usefulness. (KULT's reboot preview consisted of nothing more than a few full-sized pages of surreal art.) This preview reads like an email of an inside joke that he's sent to his gaming group.

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
