Note: The book is mainly black and white with a small amount of colour, however the premium colour option has is available for the print version as it uses high quality paper with an improved look and feel. The black and white version has identical content, without the very minor colour component.

Customer comments:

‘looks very cool. Reminds me of that other game – battle hammer....war mallet....whatever. Also the old "choose your path" adventure books.’

‘This is a fantastic hybrid of Fighting Fantasy and WFRP 1st ed., both extremely nostalgic for me. Cracking little game and easy to hack!’

‘I really like some of the design decisions you made. Every game should have your rule: “any situation not covered in the rules, roll a D6.” Career choices are great, every skill for everybody is fascinating, and going statless is bold. Everything is old school and dead simple. Can’t wait to run the game.’

What films and books influenced you to make this? I know that 1E WRFB is a big influence, but what else?

I'm a publisher, so I'm not allowed to leave a review. I want to say how much I enjoyed reading this and I can't wait for the compendiums. I recommend using the equipment/gear/weapons rules from Hypertellurians. I am shocked at how cleanly that transpose from that game to this.

Hi, any chance of a Black Edition becoming available again? I missed out on the print run and would love to have a copy of this game in that format.

There is something I can't understand in the system of this rpg: how can you do a simple strength check? What skill do you use?

Very interested in this, big fan of Warhammer Fantasy Role-Play and Fighting Fantasy. Any chance there will be a Warlock! Compendium III with more careers? Like to see Hedge-Knight, Questing-Knight, Templar, Witch Hunter and a Warrior Priest.

Has anyone come up with house rules? I've noticed that there are slight problems with the critical hit formula and pertaining charts.

For a second I thought maybe this was a update to the old CalTech Warlock Game of the 70's. I might still pick it up.

FYI, the bookmarks for the Careers and Skill chapter don't go to the right pages.

I'm also unclear on how this works: "You also gain a 'career skill' at a level equal to an average of all the skills the career grants (rounded up) as described on page 20". The calculation isn't explained on page 20 and all the careers have the same number of skills on offer at the same max levels and the same beginning amount (10).

Hi, those levels (10 and 12) are the maximum skill levels for the career, not the starting levels. You pick the starting levels as explained on page 15. You then average the levels you have in the five skills to get your career skill. Make sense? I’ll check the bookmarks thanks.

Sorry, it was entirely my misunderstanding. I was trying to work out how 10 skill points over 5 skills would come out with any other average than 2, but missed the fact that the beginning skills from page 10 would also be counted, if any are spent on skills listed under the career. My mistake.

I can't post a review here, because I'm a creator, but I did post one in my blog:

https://artifactsandrelics.blogspot.com/2020/11/its-time-to-write-more-reviews-because.html

I really love this game. I've been using it to run Deep Carbon Observatory, converted to these rules. It's not perfect, but the imperfections are easily remedied, and they are also part of the charm.

The main thing I would change about the rules is how magic works. It's just a bit too punitive. The Stamina cost for spells makes them very expensive to cast. Even though there are several combat-oriented spells, they are all worse value propositions than a sword swing. I've decided to add a Willpower trait as an analog to Stamina. That trait can also be affected by stress and magical effects. Even with that, magic is fairly low-key.

Also, it would be nice to have rules for movement, falling and poison, but it's surprising how easy it is to work around their absence. The latter two can be expressed...See more

I became aware of this game by chance. I saw the Warpstar game and was interested. As looked into it to see if I thought I might like it I found out about Warlock. I purchased both and had the pleasure of reading both over the last six or seven days. I am glad I picked up both games. I look forward to playing them.

Thank You

p81: even with armour and a shield, being struck will always cause at least 1 point of Stamina loss?
If the deductions would reduce the damage to 0, treat it as 1?

That's right, stamina represents health and, well, stamina, so even if your shield takes the blow, that's still a whack that makes your arm shake and eventually go numb...

WARLOCK RPG – ZOMBIES:

Type: Otherworldly (undead).
Actions/round: 1.
Weapon/Skill/Damage: Weapons or unarmed/2 or 3/-
Armour: Armour.
Adventuring skills: 2.
Stamina: 9 or 10.
Notes: Puppet.
Typically under the command of a Necromancer or lich.

Zombies might be unarmed and swarm their targets, or might have a hand weapon (club, short sword).
The GM can decide upon this. Perhaps having a group of unarmed zombies and 1-5 zombies armed.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
