The Encounter Building Oracle Deck is meant to replace (or at least help) the Game Master in any fantasy-based role-playing game by providing arbitration and creative prompts in any adventure you can imagine.  The system-less design of this deck allows it to be used with your RPG of choice and lets the cards be idea generators rather than specific rules of play.  In a group setting, the cards won’t replace all the planning completely, but the GM (or players who want to play without a GM) may only need to come up with the general story of the session, have level-appropriate stat blocks in mind, and bring the player characters.  These cards can do the rest with a little help from your imagination.  This means the GM can play as a PC, the group can play without a GM after agreeing upon the general storyline, or you could solo-play your favorite RPG.

The Specifics

This 100-card deck is split into six different suits that follow the same breakdown as a regular tarot deck except with an additional suit as follows:

  1. Major Arcana - 22 cards
  2. Cups - 14 cards
  3. Swords - 14 cards
  4. Pentacles - 14 cards
  5. Wands - 14 cards
  6. Supreme Arcana - 22

Each suit gives you some specific themed information.  For example, the suit of Swords gives you information about interesting objects that you can tie into the narrative, and the Major Arcana suit gives you different quests that you can undertake based on the type of terrain (underground, wasteland, forest, small village, or big city).  The deck as a whole allows you do the following:

  1. Ask yes/no questions with varying likelihood.
  2. Find random quests, beings to interact with, locations, objects of interest, and events all based on a specific terrain type.
  3. Find random rewards or treasure (including narrative rewards) and curses.
  4. Get random die rolls.
  5. Create random verb/noun combos to spark the meaning of answers.
  6. Get quick impressions using primary or reversed card meanings (similar to tarot).
  7. Find a type of random event and what is at stake as a gain or loss.
  8. Figure out what an NPC can tell you about the main plot.
  9. Get a random direction and relative difficulty of a task.

There are tons of ways that you can use all of this information, but here are the primary ways I envisioned using this deck:

  1. Play a fantasy-rpg without a GM.
  2. Develop fleshed out NPCs.
  3. Aid a GM in planning an adventure.
  4. Replacing dice at the table.

Check out the rulebook by clicking the link labeled "Alternate Preview" underneath the picture at the top of the page.

What You Get

If you order the Multiple File Formats version, you'll find a Print N' Play PDF for you to make your own card set at home, a ZIP folder of all the individual 300 dpi card images (in RGB instead of CMYK format), and the rulebook.

If you order the Physical Cards version, you'll get the cards, but I recommend selecting the option to get both the physical cards and the digital files since there's no additional cost.  Please note, DriveThru does not have a 100-card tuckbox available, so the cards will be shipped to you without a box.

This looks like a VERY cool system but it looks like I’m going to have to pass on it. I simply don’t want Tarot cards. I’m into rpg games, but I’m not into the occult aspects that are often associated - especially with the fantasy rpg genre.
I have many of your other cards - encounters, traps, locations and more - and I bought the physical cards. Why did this have to be Tarot cards? it seems by design they didn’t have to be.
Do you make a version of these without the Tarot cards?

Thanks for your comment, and I understand your concern. To be clear, these are not actual tarot cards. They are inspired by the tarot card game mechanic of getting reversed meanings when the cards are upside down. That allows you to shuffle the deck in such a way as to get twice the possible outcomes.

Also, I’ve changed several of the suggested meanings of cards from regular tarot to be more inspirational for a fantasy rpg setting. On top of that, I added more cards than actual tarot so that my deck has 100 cards (which means I had to make up an entire new suit not in regular tarot). I don’t think you could even use this deck for regular tarot as it is.

You are correct that by design these don’t have to be tarot cards, however, I ended up needing to use the tarot sized cards just to fit all the info on them!

You can also snag the PDF and put everything in tables if that’s easier for you. Hope that helps!

Hi there, I need help with printing these. For some reason, the card backs don't line up with the front when printing double sided. I tried Actual Size, Fit, Flip on long edge and Flip on short edge but nothing worked. Any ideas? Thanks.

Hello! I just did another test print with the Less Ink PNP and the regular PNP files, and both turned out great. There's always a bit of drift when printing double-sided (~2 mm or 1/16 inch), but it should not really be noticeable unless you're really looking for it. A couple of suggestions:

1) Make sure your paper feeder tray sides are nice and snug so the paper doesn't drift as much.

2) If you let the printer do the double-sided print on its own, try a single-sided print and then feed the paper back through the printer for the backs.

3) Make sure you're using the PNP files instead of the individual image files.

4) Try downloading the newly updated PNP files that I uploaded a couple of weeks ago (June 2, 2021).

5) Barring all of that, I would print them one-sided on cardstock and then glue the two halves together which has the added benefit of approximating the thickness of a regular playing card as well.

Hope that helps!

Hi Eric, thanks for your reply. I tried no. 2 and it helped a bit but the lines are still mostly unaligned (I did print the less ink PNP).

Anyway, I have a rules question. If I draw a reverse (upside down) card, can I still use the rest of the card, not just the reverse meaning or do I ignore the rest of the card? For example, I want a quest for the PCs. According to your example on page 7, I draw cards until I get a major arcana card. What if the first major arcana card I draw is upside down (reversed)? Do I simply turn it around and read its location entry or do I keep drawing until I get the right side up major arcana card?

Thanks!

I'm sorry about the printing not lining up, but I don't think I can do anything else. There was one other guy who had the same problem a couple of years ago, and we settled on it must be something with his printer. His was almost 1/4 inch off, and I have no idea how that could happen! The printing has worked for everyone else as far as I know. Maybe there's a setting on your PDF reader that is changing the size, like putting in the bookmark column on the side? The print version should be back up soon (just awaiting an updated proof to approve), and if all looks well there too, I really don't know what it could be. If you're still having problems with it, let me know. I could ship you my proof copy once I get it since I can keep my old copy (it only had the meaning of two cards flipped by accident, so not something would disrupts my use).

As for the rules question, all of the oracles are independent of the card direction except for the overall tarot-like meaning. For example, if you draw for...See more

Hi Eric, to be honest I'm 99% certain my printer is the issue (I've had other issues with it), so no big deal.

I don't know anything about tarot but thanks for the answer. I think this is an excellent product, I just need to get my head around it :)

Yeah, getting used to oracles takes time, but once you get used to it, you won't be able to imagine playing without some kind of oracle! Generally speaking, "oracle" is RPG-speak for "random generator". In essence, when you get to a place in the story where nothing springs to mind, pull out your favorite random generator and have it give you some ideas. You might think of oracles as less specific random generators as they really shine at kickstarting your imagination rather than giving you specific answers. While the QUESTS and DICE ROLLS sections on my cards are specific in nature, the rest of the card outputs are meant to be somewhat vague in order to give your imagination a direction which lets you more easily fit an idea into your story.

To see some oracles in use, I highly suggest you check out some actual plays of the game Ironsworn, and in particular, check out the Youtube series called, "Me, Myself, and Die" where Trevor Duvall plays Ironsworn all by himself...See more

Oh yep I'm not entirely new to solo RPG. I've been using your other decks and the GMA as well as Mythic in the past. And yes I'm a fan of Trevor's work in Me, Myself and Die although admittedly I haven't been following his second season (the Ironsworn) as much as I would like to. I was on the lookout for a deck to replace/use in addition to the GMA and someone posted this product.

Anyway, thanks again Eric and look forward to finding the chalk of summoning of otherworldly beings (thanks to your Supreme Arcana card)!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
