Dancing with Bullets Under a Neon Sun

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Dancing with Bullets Under a Neon Sun is a weird cyberpunk RPG for fans of the OSR. Although based on The Black Hack, it is not just a clone with renamed classes, building on the system to create a new experience, introducing new mechanics to suit the setting and tone, and revamping character creation.

Dancing with Bullets Under a Neon Sun contains five new classes: play as a Contractor, a Merc, a Phreak, a Puppet, a Shark, or a Spider. It also contains dozens of random tables for the game master, beautiful full color art, and inspired graphic design. Enjoy its unique combat systems, flavorful random tables, and item descriptions, or strip it for parts for your home game!

I just picked up Dancing with Bullets Beneath a Neon Sun with its recent sale and began reading the rules this morning. Under the section labelled "Initiative," an example is given of a group of players surrounding a Surprise Round, then rolling an Agility Check to determine whether they move before or after the gang of mercs assailing them. A portion of the text reads, "Kim rolls and gets a 14, under her Agility of 15, so Jane will go after the mercs." However, in the Checks section, it notes that rolling underneath the pertinent score indicates moving before the enemies. Is this a typo? Am I missing something here?

Yeah it's a clear typo. There are several in the book unfortunately, mostly in the worst possible place, the example section of a rule. Still love the game, but read carefully.

Digging what I'm reading so far, hope to have a written review up soon. For NPCs do you just need Hit Die, Resilience and whatever gear and special abilities the GM cooks up (no HD/level difference difficulty system like in vanilla Black Hack)? And am I reading correctly that leveling up only increases one stat score by one every even level (2, 4, 6, 8, 10) or is there more to it (Chapter VI kinda buries the lead as to what leveling up does).

Did you ever get an answer to your levelling question? I'm also struggling. It feels like there must be more to it; if it was limited to one stat increase every two levels, it seems weird that it wouldn't just take twice as long to level up, with a stat inrease every level.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
