BEOWULF: Age of Heroes

ADD TO WISHLIST >

“BEOWULF: Age of Heroes is a vast treasure-hoard that shows how you can hone the rules for 5e to make them cut like the edge of a long-seax and sing like a Scop.” – Francesco Nepitello, designer of The One Ring Roleplaying Game

One of the oldest recorded stories in Western Europe, Beowulf  is the ultimate tale of hero vs. monster – and now a dramatic, 5e setting.

Discover a fierce background of wild seas and savage monsters, of meadhalls and of heirloom swords that bear legendary names. Gain Followers, take Inspiration from unique Portents, and use our specially crafted tokens to guide your voyage along the Whale Road.

Backgrounds

Play the ‘Hero’ class, and choose from six sub-classes based on your ability scores. You can be the mighty Bench-Breaker, the wily Riddle-Reaver, or the sturdy Ox-Blooded. And you can come from a range of setting-specific backgrounds: you might be the Chosen One, or Adrift and seeking answers. You may be an Avenger, or of Noble Blood.

Written and illustrated by a team of industry veterans, led by Jon Hodgson, (The One Ring, D&D, Warhammer Historical) BEOWULF: Age of Heroes features 272 pages of beautifully illustrated mythic setting, and evokes a legendary age of tales, poems and song.

Pages from BEOWULF: Age of Heroes

Described by fans as the ‘best hack of 5e ever made’, and by games designer Will Hindmarch as something ‘really magical’, BEOWULF Age of Heroes is uniquely designed for duet play: one Hero and one GM (though it can still be played by a group). This means it’s very easy to get a game going and to keep it going, and it’s especially ideal for play over the internet.

With its feet firmly in the world’s favourite role-playing game, BEOWULF has been very carefully forged to follow the folklore, flow and feel of the original poem.

Featuring a foreword by Maria Dahvana Headley, BEOWULF: Age of Heroes is offered in both .pdf and traditional print book format. Download the free introductory scenario The Hermit’s Sanctuary.

“I audibly, genuinely gasped when I turned the digital pages of this book. It’s a beautiful work. You’ve done something really magical here. I cannot wait to play it.” – Will Hindmarch

"Beowulf is a one gm one player hack of dnd 5e with some incredibly innovative mechanics. Its a beautiful book, full of evocative art spreads and original poetry." - @pandatheist

'...presents a good blend of historical detail and mythic unknowns to evoke an epic world of Christianity, pagan gods, monsters, mead halls and, above all, heroes.' - Crowsnestsf.net

BEOWULF: Age of Heroes requires the core 5e rules to play. These are available free from Wizards of the Coast.

Hello,
I just purchased this book and it looks great! However, it looks like there may be a problem with the printable battle maps. Although the files are named as Letter or A4 size, when I open up the files none of the images fit completely on the page, anywhere from 1/3 to 3/4 of the page is white space with the actual map pushed off to the corner. Is there something I am missing to get them to print right?
Thanks!

Hi Trevor, we’ll double check that everything is as it should be, but this is normal for our sliced up battle maps. The pieces you’re seeing with the white space are the edges of the map. The sheets around the edges aren’t filled with map - the timing software we use centres the map across a grid of pages. Hope that makes sense!

Just to confirm - the files are all present and correct. Many of the maps have a white border all the way around when sliced up for home printing, and that's what you're seeing when you look at the PDFs.

That would explain it! When I saw A4/Letter I just assumed it was intended to fill each sheet of paper completely. Thanks for the quick response.

A few questions.. are the tokens top-down style, or pogs?
Does the one player - one DM format have to be followed? THe flowery intro mentioned putting a party together...
I don't want to argue how popular the D&D 5E format is.. would it be terribly difficult to convert it to Pathfinder 1E?

James,

The rulebook does include battlemaps for the included adventure but doesn't have any tokens. The sample adventure (The Hermit's Sanctuary, https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/306721) does have tokens in pog shape.
The rules include options for putting a party together, but the recommended playstyle is duet (one player, one GM).
The rules rely on many things central to 5e (advantage, inspiration, death saving throws). It would be up to you if the effort is worth the end result.

Thanks for the reply, Jacob!

Third paragraph from the top: ..."and use our specially crafted tokens to guide your voyage along the Whale Road"

Sounds like it would easy enough to switch over to PF 1st Ed.

The hard part will be trying to dig up VTT top-down tokens for the Beowulf mythos. :/ I've got no use for pog style tokens. TokenTool is still free as in free beer. ;)

Ah! The tokens are accessories that you can purchase. You don't need them, you can just use some scrap paper or some sort of digital counter to keep track of the inspiration pool (as part of a voyage, you generate a Portent and assign tokens to pools for the Hero, Followers and Monster. Those tokens can be drawn from the pool and turned into inspiration to power special features or create advantage).

Here's a video showing them off, along with other accessories: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y9Szo4Oasfk

Jon does also have a patreon where he offers digital maps and other stuff, might be worth checking out: https://www.patreon.com/jonhodgsonmaps/posts

Ah! Yes indeed.. he should change the text to read 'counters' instead of tokens. Actually, the way you said it sounds much more intriguing than either one.
..although, I still stand by what I said, I don't think it'll be an easy task to find VTT character tokens for the entire Beowuld mythos. SOme of it would be a piece of cake, some of it is unique.

Thanks for the links, I'll go check them out this instant. :D

The book includes a campaign setting with new magic items, weapons and armours based on the technology, materials and culture of the people in the setting. You can use the treasures and adventuring gear in this book either instead of the equipment in the core rules, or in addition to them.

The same goes for feats, although some of the new feats give the character some of the features of other classes (Rage, Channel Divinity, Martial Arts).

The are new lineage stats very reminiscent to the new costum lineage from Tasha's Cauldron book, that you can use in every campaign.

New monsters: about 30 statsblocks that can be used in every campaign. Also each monster have a list of optional features so can easily change the CR for most of them.

The included adventure is awesome and can be re-skinned for any campaign.

The new social statsblock is great.

However, The new class and new backgrounds are more powerful than those of the core...See more

Does Beowulf: Age of Heroes require the traditional 5e Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, and/or Monster Manual to play or is it a completely stand alone product?

You will want to have a reasonable mastery of the core 5e rules to run BEOWULF or have something like the Player's Handbook to hand, in case you have questions about how to make ability checks, the steps of character creation, combat actions or what-not. There's little need for the others, since BEOWULF: Age of Heroes provides its own suggested Monsters, magic items and an entire chapter on building BEOWULF adventures.

Do you think a copy of the 5e Basic Rules would be enough?

The Basic Rules are more than enough. The only relevant rule that is not provided in either the basic rules or in Beowulf is how to determine starting ability scores for a new player character. If you know literally ANY other edition of the d20 system except for Pathfinder 2e, you know how to determine ability scores.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
