100 Things to Find, See and Hear in a Forest (3Deep)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Characters may at some point be travelling through wooded areas, whether these be the comparatively tame woods of civilisation or the more dangerous wildwood of the uninhabited regions. Rather than simply glossing over these travels, this list provides 100 different encounters that can be used to make travel more interesting.

Some of the encounters have the potential to injure characters or animals whilst others may appear dangerous or more than they seem to be, yet not pose any hazard unless the GameMaster decides otherwise. So that the encounters are suitable, replace references to flora and fauna with ones appropriate to the region being travelled if needed.

The encounters are suitable for any system or setting, from ancient to futuristic, all that is needed is for characters to be travelling through woods. They can be used to simply add descriptions to an area being travelled, or might be used as potential adventure hooks.

This PDF supports Adobe layers and the page backgrounds and images can be disabled to make printing easier.

Here are some sample results:

  • Hide - What appears at first to be a pile of dead leaves and branches proves on examination to be a hide for hunting. The hide has partly collapsed, and would need repairing in order to use it again. (An Outdoor (Logic) roll with +2 will allow a character to repair the hide. Once repaired, the hide adds +2 to Weapon (bow) rolls, such as for hunting or during an ambush, and adds +3 to Outdoor (Logic) rolls for surviving in adverse weather.)
  • Hole - A large hole is in the side of a bank of earth. The hole is at least a foot in diameter, suggesting that it is the lair of a reasonably large creature.
  • Hole - A rabbit hole is in the ground here, not easily visible and partly hidden by fallen leaves. A character who isn't careful may put their foot in it, possibly twisting their ankle or worse. Mounts such as horses may break a leg if they step in the hole. (An Awareness (Logic) roll at +1 is required to see the hole, at -1 if the character is on a mount. If a character fails to see the hole, which includes not being informed of it by another who has, they will need to make an Athletic (Agility) roll to avoid putting a foot in the hole; failing will result in the character taking 1d6 damage and having their speed reduced by half on foot until their ankle is cured. Riders, or those leading mounts, who fail to see the hole, must make an Animal (Empathy) roll at +1 or the mount will take 1d6 damage and, if a horse, will be unable to move until healed.)
  • Insect - A large black beetle crosses the trail, unconcerned by the presence of the characters.
  • Insects - A dense cloud of tiny insects swirls under the trees, possibly biting any who walk through them. (Characters who walk through the insects must make an Athletic (Agility) roll with +1 or suffer 1d2 damage.)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
