In 1990, Palladium Books launched Rifts, a post-apocalyptic-science-fantasy-horror-mecha-role-playing game using a game system from 1981.

In 2021, two guys who played it a bunch revisited the game and, armed with hindsight, set about mocking, parodying, and critiquing the game. It turned into this embarrassingly long book.

  • Coverage of the basic rules, the nearly 30 (i.e. 27) classes, psionics, magic, the Rifts Earth setting, gear, and what passes for the gamemaster section.
  • Insights into the game's history and inner workings.
  • Snarky jokes and humorous tables and lists, like a class generator, random skull armor, bests and worsts, plus a Palladium Bingo card!
  • The Glitterskull R.C.C. and playbook, letting you play as the "mascot" of the game at long last.
  • Magic & Missiles, a fully playable one-page RPG!
  • Over 200 superfluous footnotes.
  • An in-depth criticism of the game's Nazi apologism. It's worse than you think, and we brought receipts.

We don't mention it in the book, but you might be thinking of Breachworld, done by Jason Richards, who's freelanced for Palladium in the past.

Yes that’s it! Thanks, for some reason I was convinced it was mentioned in the book.

No problem! I haven't read it yet, so I couldn't comment.

Not everybody has to "get it". That's fine! No ill will towards Palladium; just tough, honest opinions, some positive, some negative. That's how the criticism crumbles.

Palladium Books is still much larger than either Ewen or I in the gaming industry, and they've weathered a lot worse than we. They're tough old birds; they'll be okay.

I don't get it; this appears to be your second "product" dedicated to trashing Palladium Books and Rifts. At the same time, one of the authors is Kickstarting a game directly based on one produced by Palladium Books. Making a profit off of punching downward? As a below poster commented, "there is no self-awareness left in the world."

It's good to see this is getting some buzz.

I think if love Rifts, you'll find some stuff to dig in here. It's a weird and wonky game and we had a lot of fun talking about it, making weird tables and jokes, and generally goofing. If you're expecting a pure hate-read or attack piece, you won't find it here. When the game gets stuff right, we acknowledge that. When it doesn't, well- we definitely acknowledge that too. It's an old game with over 100 supplements, it's a proven success, it can take the heat from two jokers like us.

Both of us have played plenty of Rifts, and though it might sound silly, it was a real labor of love. Even if you don't agree with us, I think you'd find stuff like the 10 hottest dragons in Rifts books (and no, I'm not talking temperature), Skull Armor Generation tables, or a musical setlist themed around the different classes fun.

Either way, thanks for the comments!

I think there's a better-known track than Krokus' for that class on the playlist, but otherwise, pretty much spot on (if in need of occasional proof-reading, although that may have been an intentional pastiche of RIFTS). Echoed a lot of thoughts I'd had about the game (and the setting), and had answers for some of the questions I'd had (e.g. the number of times Kevin has played in, rather than run, a game in the Rifts world, or the development time for the game).

Oh no, Ewen: looks like someone lit the Flame of Grognard!

A whole book for $8.00 that is dedicated to trashing Palladium and Rifts? Seems pretty snarky to do such a thing. Just because it's old doesn't make it bad.

A company that makes knock off anime rpgs making fun of Rifts, truly there is no self-awareness left in the world.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
