Dark Lord's Doom (The Fantasy Trip)

Military campaigns seem underrepresented in fantasy adventures. In this superior offering the clash of armies is an epic backdrop to a variety of small unit encounters: a desperate holding action on a bridge; bar brawls; battling enemy commanders in the field; leading a heroic charge over the battlements, or sneaking through a tunnel; daring rescues; confronting the Dark Lord himself. There is a random element in play (which is reasonable given the unfolding bigger picture), but past actions matter, those doing well or having the right skills get bonuses. Aside from the unit being wiped out, failure tends to lead to a tougher challenge rather than immediate campaign end. There is sometimes an option to retreat.
The writing is engaging, paragraphs painting a vivid picture without becoming flabby. There is replay value. Links are accurate (which is vital for a numbered paragraph solo). Well produced: easy to read text, a handsome cover...See more and nice interior art.
One of four top class solo adventures recently written by this author. (See also Dragon Hunt, Red Crypt and Vampire Hunter Belladonna.) The Fantasy Trip is a fun and easy system to pick up and play, more challenging to master. However those preferring other systems should be able to convert to the likes of GURPS, Runequest or Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay with some work. For this particular scenario, lowish level D+D would serve.
