SCRAWL: Revised Edition (Beta)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

EDIT: I've changed this to free, not PWYW. If you have money to spare, use it to help the people in Ukraine instead please.

Please note that this is the latest version of SCRAWL. There is SCRAWL: Ultimate edition which I am no longer making products for, but you are free to download it for PWYW.

Welcome to SCRAWL: Revised edition (Beta).

SCRAWL is short for Solo Crawl is a solo fantasy game system which encourages old style crawling around wildernesses, cities and dungeons, exploring strange new locations, looking for treasure, meeting interesting creatures and slaying them. This is 100%, good old fashioned, completely unapolagetic murder-hobo crawling.

This is the revised edition which has 8 books which enable you to take a party of up to 4 characters to explore the overland, stay in settlements and then loot dungeons. There are terrain generators, site and settlement generators and dungeon generators for a large variety of terrains, settlements and dungeons.

This edition is similar to the ultimate edition except it now has all of my ideas bundled up into one little package.

You can make the game as simple or as complicated as you like - you can create a party just to explore a dungeon, or you could attempt solo gamebooks (which will be released in the future) or you could do the whole kerboodle and generate an overland populated with all kinds of places which you can keep records of and explore to your heart's content.

This is still a beta version - feedback will be welcome and I hope to get all of the cover art, at least, to be specially made for SCRAWL.

Keep your eyes on this site for futher updates and happy SCRAWLing!

Looks like a good game, but I think I’m overlooking something. I get how to generate levels but what about the individual rooms? And did I miss the solo adventures?

The maps are in 1.2 .What's in the rooms is generated in 4.1 Dungeon tables and the details are in 4.2.

1.1_SCRAWL Revised rules, page 45, Creature special characteristics, last sentence in first paragraph, "Frist Strike characteristic", is probably meant to be 'First Strike'.

Hello!

Another thing I noticed, there seem to be no rules for starvation.
I assume I can simply use the rules for resting (each day without at least one meal -1 Will)?

And one thing I have been wondering about since the rules don't explicitly state it. Required abilities/items/etc. also count as applicable abilities/items/etc., right? So, for an ability test, they also grant rerolls, and for ordeals, they reduce the cost.

Yours,
Deathworks

Hi Deathworks. Good question.
You don't actually lose Will for eating a meal, because the game assumes that even if you don't, a character is able to get enough food, water and rest to just get by.

Also, required abilities and items don't grant rerolls unless they also happen to be in the reroll bit. I'll make that clearer.

Hello!

So, after meeting a visiting priest (nature - yay!) at their home hamlet, the characters move to a neighbouring plains hex and find a monastery besides roads and a ghost village. Visiting the monastery, it turns out to be an artisan monastery.

Looking through the options in the sites and settlement tables book, I noticed an oddity. For seeking an audience in any monastery, no matter what deity it is dedicated to, the requirements list "death initiate". I presume that should be an initiate of the monastery's deity family, right?

Hello!

I haven't really started playing because I have been busy at work and in my free time there have been too many distraction. But I have finished setup and I am very pleased with character creation. Please note that I don't play for a challenge but for a narration, so I play in easy mode and with some house rules to make things more reasonable (like having starting characters have improvised daggers and any equipment that is unreasonable not to have with their skills).
I did random creation and I was really lucky that the first three characters immediately formed a good base for a standard RPG party, although they are still lacking some useful abilities (like melee).

Emily:
Woodcraft, Ranged Combat, Darkvision, Concentration, Mist, Charm

Emily has often been called out by the other children because of her green eyes and pointed ears. Her mother has told everyone that Emily is a daughter of her and a wood-elf. Unfortunately, the elf only spent a short time...See more

Hello!

I noticed another thing: In the Overland Tables book, in the section explaining how to travel to an unexplored/randomly generated hex, the last step reads as follows: "6) Make a Party Fate roll on the table for neighbouring terrain to the hex to determine what terrain the new hex has and how many sites it has."

However, as far as I understand it, in SCRAWL Revised, the sites (including the number of sites in a hex) are determined only during exploring a hex, so the part "and how many sites it has" shouldn't be there.

Hello!

Just a quick question.
The Wizard, Evoker starter kit mentions the two powers Flame and Freeze, but those are not described in the powers section. Are they misprints or what are their specifics in this version?

Hi Deathworks! Many thanks for spotting this. They were old powers from about 15 iterations ago. I've changed the powers to Ignite (which did the same as flame) and Mist.
After a lot of playtesting, I will release the file with all the changes.

Take your time, I just printed this version, and want to do some gaming before another print run :)

Another quite obvious typo in the core rule book. On the page for treasures, in the entries for artefact, codex, and contraption, the instruction say that if you have 1 of the relevant abilities and your have 0 clues, you can set the number of clues you have to 0. Obviously, that should be you can set the number of clues you have to 1.

Another thing I noticed. Neither the core rules nor the dungeon tables book explain how to use the dungeon maps.

I suppose whenever I enter a dungeon for the first time and whenever I enter a new level in a dungeon, I make a Double Fate roll to pick a map from the printables book for that particular level. Right?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
