Kingsport, June, 1933. The heroes are contacted by Old Cobb, a fisherman who claims to have found a waterlogged diary on a boat adrift at sea. The diary is from Howard Winchester, a well-known explorer and friend of the heroes, and describes the discovery of a mysterious island connected to a pirate known as John “Black Teeth” Keetes and a cache of South American gold. The last entry hints that Howard may be trapped on the island. Off to rescue their friend and find the pirate treasure, the heroes discover strange statues, crazed survivors, and a pirate cove that holds the real secret behind the island, and why it should never have been found in the first place…

The Curse of Black Teeth Keetes is a Pulp Cthulhu adventure set in the 1930s, and can be played as a one-shot or integrated into an existing campaign. It is designed for four to six players and can work with either new or experience heroes. Designed for medium pulp, the adventure is easily scaled for more or less pulp, and can also be used for regular Call of Cthulhu investigator games.

Designed for 7th Edition Call of Cthulhu, using the Pulp Cthulhu supplement, The Curse of Black Teeth Keetes features:

  • A 12 page scenario
  • Plenty of Keeper’s Notes for suggestions and hints throughout
  • 7 Player Handouts (also included separately)
  • A map of the pirate ship, Black Fin
  • A map of the pirate cove
  • A full write up of a new elder god, Vaglon-Thadd, the Watcher
  • Five pre-generated heroes
  • A Simplified document for accessibility

This adventure was inspired by classic movies like the Goonies, Indiana Jones, and The Mummy. It was part of a writing project through the Storytelling Collective’s RPG Writer Workshop (storytellingcollective.com). A big thanks goes to the many instructors involved, and my “virtual classmates” on the Discord channel, who all helped to keep me on the path to publishing this CoC adventure. Also, a huge thanks of course to all of my playtesters and readers who helped with polishing the rough edges!

Here's what others are saying:

"Grosshans nails the pulp aesthetic with his fast paced Call of Cthulhu module. He clearly set out to deliver a Goonies and Indiana Jones inspired adventure and absolutely delivered. The aides for the Keeper are well done and should guide the story and module where it needs to go. Grosshans smartly gives options for each major encounter to ratchet up the dread, so even if pulp isn't your flavour of eldritch tea, this module will delight more traditional Call of Cthulhu fans with very little modification. Fantastic character art by Jason Booth really helps set the tone." - Chadwick Ginther, author of the Thunder Road trilogy

“I am very impressed with the thoroughness of this adventure.  Overall I had a lot of fun with this adventure.  I always enjoy seeing a lot of pulp adventures and I wish there were more of them out there, and this one did not disappoint us.” Seth Skorkowsky, YouTube Review, December 6, 2021.

“Solid, straightforward plot, very useful staging advice, excellent illustrations, good one-shot or convention scenario.” - Reviews from R'lyeh

“This really is a textbook case of great scenario writing that puts fun and player agency at the forefront of the game design.” Raymond H. 5 Star DriveThruRPG review and Dice Ranger magazine, Issue 2.

“I really like this scenario a lot…very well-written and formatted, and the included player handouts are very well done.” –  Micheal B, 5 Star DriveThruRPG review

Ever wondered what would happen if you tossed some pages from Treasure Island, Script outlines from Lost and a select few pieces of the Cthulhu Mythos together like salad? It turns out that it makes a PERFECT Pulp Cthulhu adventure. Now granted Pulp is a little different to “vanilla” Cthulhu, but I really dig this adventure. It inspires feelings of nostalgia for the first time I read Robert Louis Stevenson, watched Indiana Jones, played Tomb Raider or even flipped through some of the old Hardy Boys adventures. This setting really is perfect for a Cthulhu Pulp adventure. The mystery of the Mythos and exotic elements of surviving on an island make for a really fun ride both for the Keeper and the players alike.

I think there is a real lesson here for module writers and that is knowing your core business. If you are writing for a swashbuckling adventure, then you have to set that tone clearly. This module simply would not work as a classic Cthulhu adventure and because of that it leans in and runs...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
