The Sins of the Father - A Call of Cthulhu Scenario

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Merry Christmas! Your old Uncle Douglas is deathly ill, and he has called the whole Prescott family together for one last Christmas - and anyone who doesn't come is getting written out of the will. As you hear your cousin and your aunt screaming at each other in the next room, you settle in with a glass of wine: you're going to need it. Because things are about to get a whole lot worse.

The Sins of the Father is a horror mystery scenario for 7th Edition Call of Cthulhu, set in a fabulous manor house in the rural mountains of British Columbia in 2005. The investigators are members of the deeply dysfunctional Prescott family, coming to celebrate what will surely be a truly unpleasant family Christmas. As a blizzard begins to envelop the house, family resentments turn to murder, and the investigators must uncover the true killer.

This scenario is designed for 2-4 players, and it should take about 2 sessions of 4 hours each. The scenario is a low- to no-combat scenario that emphasizes roleplay and investigation.

Don't fret! The holidays may be over, but the horror is not! This scenario is set on Christmas Eve, but it can be set any time in the year - all you need is a blizzard or torrential rainstorm.

What's included in this scenario?
- A 49-page PDF, fully bookmarked for ease of use
- A unique 20-page scenario that mixes classic murder mystery with supernatural horror and science fiction.
- Two dozen illustrations, including four pieces of beautiful original art from Chris Huth (cover artist for Blackwater Creek).
- A full-colour map of the sprawling manor house, Castle Kilmarnock - both Keeper and player versions, plus printer-friendly versions of each.
- A full-colour map of the estate by Benjamin Wenham, with both a Keeper and player version.
- Four pre-generated investigators - all equally awful members of the dysfunctional Prescott family.

Note: This product contains assets that were procedurally generated with the aid of creative software(s) powered by machine learning. More specifically, a handful of character portraits were created using ArtBreeder -- all other assets are created by myself or professional artists. The decision to include these assets was made in late 2021, well before Chaosium's policy on the matter. My opinions on the subject have changed since -- a completely remastered second edition with no AI assets is coming in 2023. Thanks for your patience and understanding!

Sorry but i dont quiet get it - are the Players parts of the prescott family with the belonging Secret? Or are the players " normal" investigators but know something about 1 person of the family?

If i play this adventure with 4 ppl - do only these 4 ppl appear in the adventure and the rest of the family doesnt appear?

Nevermind I saw there was a pre gen character sheet with it. So then only a last question. Does every NPC written in the Story appear in the adventure? So the 4 Player for example and all the other NPCs?

Hi Max. As written, all named NPCs appear, and all unused PCs are ignored. The players' interaction with the NPCs is a huge part of the fun of the scenario, so it wouldn't really work without them.

The investigators are members of the Prescott family and therefore, they know some dirt on their family members. This only serves as a roleplaying hook and as potential information/misdirection during the scenario.

This looks like a really cool adventure. There is one thing I don't understand however. Are you supposed to give each investigator a secret of their own, or are they supposed to know one of the secrets of the npc's?

Each player should be given one of the NPC family member's secrets, to help encourage roleplay.

Hello, i have a few questions :
1_ why there is only one pregen character (Alex prescott) ? Who are the other ?
2_ "Connor Prescott does not show up, as well as any of the investigators who are not chosen. This is meant to add another layer of uncertainty to the mystery." who are those investigator who are not chosen because 3 of the character sheet at the end are blank ????

Hey Raphael, thanks for bringing this to my attention. I'm not sure what the source of this error is - the character sheet PDFs work properly on their own, but it seems that combining the PDFs led to some kind of bug. I will fix the main PDF as soon as I can, but in the meantime I've uploaded the character sheets, and they should be available for you to download. They should work with Adobe Acrobat.

To your other question, any of the pre-gen investigators who are not used by a player are treated as NPCs who do not come to the family gathering. This is mainly for practical reasons, as the family is a set cast of characters and they can't easily be written out of the scenario, but also to make the investigators wonder if they might somehow be involved.

The character sheets should now be available, please take a look at the scenario files. Thanks for your support!

Thank you very much! All is fine :)
I guess that Alex and Jaime don't have a portrait because they can be female or male?

Glad to hear it. Exactly, I wanted to leave them unisex, so it would have been difficult to find a good picture to use.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
