688 pages of Swords & Wizardry monstrosities!

Producing The Tome of Horrors Complete for the Swords & Wizardry game (S&W) is a wondrous tale of love for the original role-playing game, compiling the first three entries in The Tome of Horrors series in one book. The original Tome was produced to present First Edition monsters in Third Edition terms. The second and third entries in the series introduced large quantities of new creatures to the game. Now, The Tome of Horrors Complete for Swords & Wizardry takes all these monsters back in time and re-describes them for the Original Edition (which S&W emulates).

In creating this book for S&W, the authorial team embarked on an unusual journey: the task of forgetting as well as remembering, creating as well as documenting, and re-imagining instead of reproducing. In many ways, interpreting the First Edition monsters in terms of the Original Edition is to explore new territory — familiar territory, but territory that still contains surprises, opportunities, and unexpected inspirations. This aspect of the book is highlighted by tremendously creative short scenarios for each monster written by John Stater, Jeff Harkness, and Gary Schotter, offering a view of the monster that captures the vital and vibrant spirit of the Original Edition’s terse, folkloric, and evocative style in an entirely new way.

S&W Referees can bring back that sense of wonder and awe to their games, no matter how long they have played. Here there be monsters in quantities so large that players could encounter new ones for months. The addition of lair encounters really adds to the entertainment and utility value of an already awesome collection of monsters. So, flip through The Tome of Horrors Complete entries, add some new monsters to your campaign, and imagine the hell out of it!

Is there overlap between this and Swords and Wizardry Monstrosities?

I bought this hoping to use the monsters in one of the books I'm going to publish, but the licence has been butchered. The book is probably not compliant to the letter not the spirit of the OGL.

Please, for the love of God, make this print on demand! It's the one thing missing from my collection that I can't stomach not having.

Look at the page count, I don't think Drive-Thru's POD service can handle this. This book is ungodly rare, trust me, I feel for you (and me). I've been trying to scoff up a copy for awhile and I can't even find one - even in the that 'collector' price range. I wish they'd re-release it, this is a holy grail of OSR monsters.

Right, I guess it's easier to get the individual books.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
