Stars Without Number Equipment Database
by Tyler S. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 04/07/2023 13:51:27

I am usually wary of this stuff because you can end up with a book that gives you a bunch of equipment that doesn't feel appropriate. Whether to OP, weird, you name it, it always feels like a risk.

In the case of SWN:ED, the risk was well-worth it. The author clearly designed this to enhance the diversity of equipment within the realm of reason. Not only is new equipment introduced, but new mechanics if you choose the accompanying equipment that are sensible, again adding simply more options that seem pretty good rather than anything excess or question. I've shown this work to friends that I'm going to run a game with and they think the options add a much needed variety.

Now, there are some things where it may be irrelevant or there are pre-existing things that you feel make it unnecessary, that was my case, but they were incredibly few. I think the author does a good job of also including alternative notes and also hashing out, not just distinct equipment, but creating additional equipment on the lower end of the scale. An example here is the author has created a bunch of additional drones, but the drones distinctly feel like taking the basic, primitive drone and merely dividing it up so that there are more meaningful, lower cost drones that don't accomplish the niche of the mid-tier and higher tier drones. It's that attention to expanding equipment that makes me appreciative of picking this up.

Outside of that, there are some typos and some choices (I don't feel the need for droids myself with the SWN:R robots chapter) I shrug over, but those are not irrelevant enough to me to ding this. For the price, I think it's well worth it to add even more flavor and reasonable mechanics to the game.

Stars Without Number Alien Database
by Matthew M. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 06/09/2022 09:11:23

A little flawed, but for some GMs utterly necessary.

If you really want to make Stars Without Number dungeons and dragons in space, your combat encounters will likely get boring and easy fast. SWN's xenobestiary, such as it exists, is simple to a fault. This makes statting out a random alien creature doable in 30 seconds for when the party goes where you aren't expecting it to, but it doesn't make that interesting boss encounter when you want to pull out all the stops. This book fixes that problem, easily. And honestly for a great price. It fills a niche as the "Stars Without Number Monster Manual." Many of these aliens are actually very strong, which is a welcome addition to the game. SWN revised doesn't usually offer a lot of good combat challenges for high level PCs. Many of the monsters are also quite creative in their strengths and weakness, like a scorpion automaton that has powerful weapons and beefy hit points, but cannot make conscious tactical decisions, and rolls 1d6 every round to determine what its action will be. Or a plant that lets off a psionic field that does all kinds of nasty things.

Only two issues I will point out: First, some of these monsters really are just D&D-expies. That's s a little disappointing because I could theoeretically adapt those myself. Maybe I wouldn't do it in the same way. The second is that the book has frequent typos. At first I accepted them on the basis of self-published writing, but when I started seeing how common the errors were (one every 1-3 sentences in some of the alien entries) I started to wonder if this was written by an english-second-language writer. So far, none of it has prevented me from understanding what the writer is trying to say, but I haven't read it cover to cover, and I can imagine it being an issue if there is an unclear enough sentence.

Hello Mathew, thanks for the feedback and the review. I read this review only now because I had not received a notification in my email from DrivethruRpg. About the typo errors you are right, at first I wrote the content myself, as non-english native, then, as soon as I found a proofreader I managed to send the content to him and republish a corrected version. If typo errors persist please let me know. About inspiration from D&D books you are right, I took some creatures from the AD&D 2e list and took inspiration from them, then adapted in some way the content and in many cases explored completely new ideas. I am now using my own Alien Generator to create new more "original" aliens to expand the list of this book, with the plan to have a decent number of alien creatures and a better outlook so that this title can become available in print version.

Good stuff! (And receptive author!) Very helpful, especially in situations where you need to work on what type of mining occurs in Wave Echo Cave after completing Lost Mines of Phandelver.

Stars Without Number Equipment Database
by Eric F. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/30/2021 10:36:15

When it comes to interstellar rpg games there's one thing that's always been a pain in the afterburner. That's the fact that there's never enough equipment to satisfy every science fiction or science fantasy fan. And this was something that came across when looking over Troll Lord Games's Starship Warden rpg book. Not that there isn't enough sci fi equipment & weapons. But enough to satisfy the sci fi fanatics? What to do?! Fortunately all of the heavy lifting was taken care of by ANGRY GOLEM GAMES. And their book 'The Stars Without Number Equipment Database'.

If your expecting oogles of sci fi artwork & fantastic equipment illustrations there's none of that. And that's fine for this sci fi rpg fan because we're interested in stats, suits, armor, weapons, & all kinds of mayhem inducing devices. And that's exactly what we get here! There are solid stats on, ' Armors, Ranged Weapons, Melee Weapons, Heavy Weapons, Ammunition's, Communications, Computing & Accessories, Field Equipment, Pharmaceuticals, Tools and Medical, Batteries and Generators, Vehicles, Drones, Droids, Cyberware and Misc. Equipment.' All of this comes in solid sixty two pages of ultra violence goodness that your PC's are gonna wanna use. 'The Stars Without Number Equipment Database' isn't sit on shelf equipment & weapons but actual fighting & solidly made stuff that you can equip your PC's with or better yet your NPC's! There's enough in sixty two pages to get a full on adventuring group equipped & ready to start kicking alien or human behind. And its well done. The book is well laid out & very much up to ANGRY GOLEM GAMES standards.

The Stars Without Number Equipment Database' is sheer OSR & it's ready to go for those games easily. And this is something we find time & again ready to go for each of these weapons. The Stars Without Number Equipment Database' will easily work with OSR games such as Mutant Future or Stars Without Number Revised. 'The Stars Without Number Equipment Database' is a solid book which does exactly what it says on the tin & title. That is it gives you gobs of weapons, armor, & equipment for your OSR sci fi games & it does it well.

The Lost Crypt - one shot adventure
by Bob V. G. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 02/20/2021 17:45:29

The Lost Crypt - one shot adventure, is a four hour adventure for Fifth Edition D&D. It is designed for a dungeon master and up to six level one characters. It is free/pay what you want at DriveThruRPG. It is eleven pages long and contains one map, one 1d6 chart, and fifteen room descriptions. I soloed this adventure with a solo engine I have been testing out. The system I used to play this was Satanic Mars: Basic (also pay what you want). I did use six characters. To give this the proper science fiction flavor, I took out the magic ring, scepter, and medusa, and replaced those items with Shadow, solar cell, and plasma shotgun. It took the characters four days to clean out the crypt. Two of the encounters were outside at night when they were trying to camp for eight hours. They were able to rescue a female pilgrim who had been captured. Give this fun adventure a try!

MINING GUIDE
by Ryan J. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/19/2020 11:12:30

Time is precious and reinventing the wheel is not an appealing activity for me. This supplement provided me a nice framework when the dwarf in my party wanted to reclaim a local mine from a band of squatting ogres. Rolling on the random tables helped us determine just how lucrutive his downtime activities would be. This is something I can keep in my back pocket for when the right situation arises.

Stars Without Number - Dresdner Multipurpose Corvette
by CD F. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/02/2020 18:59:57

Three Decks of ship, adventure hooks and some NPC stats make this a really good buy. Not an adventure, but it lays out a good space for adventurers and a GM for a military campaign or an infiltration mission.
