Superlatives Core Rulebook
by Rachel W. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 06/19/2020 08:18:33

A genius ruleset that maximises playability, flexibility and mad cap creative fun.

The core rules are so elegant you can have a party of noobs create their characters and get to grips with the basics of play within 15 minutes. However, this ease and speed does NOT come at the cost of limiting play potential - quite the reverse.

Rather than players choosing from a pre-defined menu of skills, characters start out with a loosely defined set of super powers and experiences - which can be ANYTHING they can think of - so long as the games master will tolerate it.

But the best part is the character progression system. Rather than grinding XP to buy from a railroaded menu of advanced skills, characters expand their existing skill set by trying out new applications of existing powers - establishing new precedents for what those powers now encompass. Thus, to progress, you need to get inventive - so the rule system itself incentivises creative play. Characters skills can develop very quickly and in really surprising directions, thus every game within a campaign turns out fresh and exciting.

100% recommended.

Superlatives Core Rulebook

I've loved the superhero genre for as long as I can remember. Big personalities and bigger lasers, what's not to love? But somehow I've never had an rpg that captured that atmosphere. Mutants and Masterminds has too much maths getting in the way of the action for my taste, and whilst Masks is an excellent system it is, by design, very limited in the stories you can tell with it. Enter Superlatives. This system does a beautiful job of capturing so much of what I love about the genre whilst avoiding turning the game into a stat-block-off. You know that moment when your favourite hero uses their powers in a cool new way, and you turn to your friend and say "See! I told you he could form shields with his flame projection" and they look at you confused because they don't remember the argument you had three years ago? Well the precendents system lets you bring that to your tabletop, and it's great! The main limits to your powers are your imagination (and some willing dice) and it allows for loads of creative ways to solve problems. The lack of rules bloat also means the book has space for a rich and varied bestiary suited for campaigns of all shapes and sizes.

With a sleek but narratively rich system, Superlatives fills a much needed void in tabletop superhero gaming. It is by far my favourite tabletop superhero system and I can't wait to play it again.

This is a terrific new supers RPG that does everything based on Precedents and simple descriptions of your powers or skills. You never have to consult a long list of powers, everything you need can be found on your character sheet. It also has a sweet way of interlinking the backstories of the heroes that form the PCs group by way of individual "Issues" that happen prior to the first session of the game and then continue to happen between game sessions, which is an innovative touch I've seen nowhere else. The only downside, if I were to have to pick one, is that combat damage is oddly arbitrary and can make for long slogs. I did a bit of house-ruling on that front to speed things up a bit by eliminating a seperate damage roll and having damage be related to how much you made the attack roll by, and that helps. But that is a small holdover from old-school kinds of games and is easily tweaked. The author also has made a vast library of sourcebooks and settings, all of which were seen by the Kickstarter backers and definitely add value if you are looking for a setting rather than adapting the game to a setting you already have. Also, I should note that because of the descriptor-based way everything is handled, adapting any existing property to Superlatives is a breeze! This does a fine job of emulating it's genre and, at least in my opinion as a collector of super-hero RPGs, is a must-buy! EDIT: I have decided that while I'd love to give it a 4.75 if such a thing were possible, this is the best supers game I've seen come down the pike in a long time, my own homebrew included, and I bumped my grade up to 5 stars! It takes a lot to get me to consider to forego my own homebrew game!

I've played virtually every superhero RPG known to man. Of that list, Superlatives may be the very best at emulating the comic book heroes that inspire it of them all! The limitation system and "solo issue" development is genuinely innovative. Highest possible recommendation!
