Rune Academy

Just during my first playthrough of this game I began to see all the different possibilities there are for playing it. It can be played on fun game nights, for study sessions, and for so many other scenarios. The game itself is a ton of fun and super easy to set up. Creating a character is as easy as printing off who you want and naming them. There are also plenty of options for trivia already provided with over a dozen categories ranging from spanish to math sets. The great thing about the game is that you can create your own custom sets, which is why I say that there are many settings that this game could be played in. Whether with personally made science/history/math trivia or more fun tv show/movie/pokemon/music/etc. trivia. When you have decided on the trivia sets you will be using for the game you then choose one of the maps provided and shuffle monsters for you to encounter. You go through the stages of the map and encounter monsters with your party (or solo). To do damage and defend from them you must answer a designated amount of trivia cards. By defeating enemies you earn Runes which are then used to either heal or use a characters abilities. Everyone shares the Runes together as well which I actually really enjoyed because it led to discussions about who needs health or what abilities should be used when. I played this game with the math, spanish, and the elements trivia cards. Even with little knowledge in two of the three trivia categories I still found myself enjoying the game immensely. I was unable to successfully beat our map on my groups first go, but if you do win you get individual rewards which you can use to upgrade your character permanently. Whether it's a new spell, item, or weapon. I really love this feature because it allows me to continue to improve my character over multiple games, allowing for them to get stronger and stronger each time I successfully beat a map. Overall, I really have enjoyed this game so far and am excited to play it with different groups. I definitely recommend this to anyone considering and the content provided is well worth the price that is asked.

Rune Academy rocks. Charming art, fun aesthetics, and great design. Replayable and fun each time: different classes, runes, enemies, and maps lead to different adventures, while the different question sets add even more variation. The game is balanced well between character and monster power levels. Player power level is a factor as well; if a player is weak on a certain question category, they can be a liability, while a player strong in a category may be the edge that a party needs. Sometimes it's quite a challenge to defeating a bird man, so you had better brush up on your knowledge.

What's not to love about a game that includes a Dire Hippo and Dancing Silverware as monsters?

Rune Academy is a fun mix of reinfrocing educational skills and table top RPG. The PDF has a hyperlinked table of contents (as well as items throughout the rule book), which is super helpful! As an adult, I enjoyed playing myself. It was almost like “Are you Smarter Than a 5th Grader?” Who knew state capitals would be so easy to forget! As a teacher, I can really get behind this game as it not only reinforces skills at home, but it does it in an intriguing and family-friendly way. I often have parents that want to help support their child and this game would be perfect for that. The cards are already made, all you have to do is cut! I love that the characters and monsters all have their own personalities. The question sets range from Kindergarten skills to high school skills, which really allows the game to be played by families with multiple kids at multiple skill levels. What a creative game, thanks!
