by Robert B. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/07/2023 01:23:53

a great set of rules for frequent and repeated naval use. a reasonable price. i would only use if you intend to use naval combat and seafaring heavily in your campaign.

Ki Unleashed (5E)
by James B. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/30/2023 23:47:12

Three new monk subclasses for D&D 5th Edition:

  • Way of Lost Souls: A monk that binds themselves to an undead spirit who can aid them in battle, with different abilities for different types of spirit. Very fun concept and features, with immediate roleplaying elements to boot. Definitely the best of the three.
  • Way of the Silver Chain: Ostensibly a monk that deals in things astral and dream, but also adept at fighting with a silver chain. It feels like a mashup of concepts that probably should have been distinct, but has some fun elements and actually doesn't work too badly. Still, it's probably the weak link here; the sidebar even seems to acknowledge this to some degree.
  • Way of the Wild: A monk that can select from various animal-themed fighting styles. Definitely a martial-arts concept lacking from the core monk, and decently well-executed here with lots of customizability. While there are hiccups ("Otter Style" gets misidentified once as "Crocodile Style"), and the various features don't all seem perfectly balanced with one another, there's a lot to like here.

All in all, a decent trio of options worth picking up. Though the $1.95 price is slightly high for five pages of material, so you may wish to wait for a sale...

Shaman Class (5E)
by James B. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 08/21/2022 08:22:41

A new class for D&D 5th Edition focused on being a member of a tribe with a connection to spirits. The resulting class resembles a hybrid of warlock and Totem Warrior barbarian. The core class's mechanics are fine, but disappointingly, it's also plain that they're mostly reskinned mechanics from other classes (and not just the aforementioned two). The flavor also feels too narrow, with its insistence on tribal elements, instead of focusing on the spiritual aspect. Furthermore, the subclasses don't mesh as well with the core class as they should. Path of the Corruptor (focused on evil spirits) and Path of the Wild (focused on totem spirits) work best - although the latter is really similar to the Totem Warrior - but Path of the Spirit is mostly about making your character ghostly, while Path of the Elements barely references spirits at all. All in all, this Shaman is functional, but falls short of what it could have been, had there been more focus on its core concept and flavor.

Mysteries of the Gods (5E)
by James B. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/27/2022 01:15:55

Three new cleric domains for D&D 5th Edition, plus a selection of new spells.

  • Blood Domain: This is OK, but essentially just a cleric that will benefit (more than usual) from killing things. This might be mechanically appealing, but there's not much here for roleplay.
  • Exorcism Domain: The most thematically interesting of the three, and probably the best designed, but (as they warn) a bit specialized.
  • Spirit Domain: An oddball, this feels like it would be more at home as a druid subclass, rather than a cleric option. Or possibly as its own class altogether (note an alternate name is "shaman").
  • New spells: Angelic Boon allows you to basically damage or heal on the fly; mechanically useful, but it feels a bit cheap as a result. The cantrips overall feel too strong; also, Spirit Claw being intended for just one domain seems against 5th Edition standards. The other spells are fine.

By Flame, Storm, and Thorn (5E)
by James B. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 04/07/2022 01:48:19

Three new ranger archetypes for D&D 5th Edition:

  • Lantern-Bearer: A ranger wielding a lantern with largely support-based magic abilities. Interesting features with some very flavorful imagery. The only rules concern is that the secondary 3rd-level feature might provide a few too many benefits at that level, despite the restrictions; consider delaying some of those elements to 11th level. Also, the archetype is a bit specialized, and might not fit into every campaign.
  • Stormcloak: A ranger with lightning- and thunder-themed powers. Looks very fun, and definitely the archetype in the book that's easiest to use in a standard campaign.
  • Thornguard: A ranger specialized in creating and using traps. A trap-master ranger is a nice archetype to have, and this seems to model the concept pretty well. The only complaint is that you have to spend a reaction to activate a trap; meaning the traps aren't sprung automatically, and no more than one can be activated per turn. This is probably fair balance-wise, but still a little disappointing.

This product is a good choice for anyone looking to expand their ranger options. At $2.95 it's slightly overpriced for only five pages of rules material, but this is definitely worth picking up as part of a sale or bundle.

Through Their Own Eyes (5E)
by James B. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/23/2022 02:01:21

A collection of alternate background traits based around the core D&D 5th Edition player races, as well as aasimar, goblins, and kobolds. There's some repetition between and within the lists for the various races, and some minor formatting issues here and there (plus a surprise profanity in the goblin section that stands out like a sore thumb)... but overall this is a useful resource for players and DMs who want their character backgrounds to reflect racial and cultural origins. The product also encourages alternate ways to view each character race, which is a nice bonus.

Steampunk Adventurers (5E)
by James B. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/06/2022 06:54:20

A collection of steampunk-themed options for D&D 5th Edition games. The material provided is wide-ranging, including:

  • One new background (Fortune Teller) and one variant background (Apothecary, a variant Guild Artisan). The Fortune Teller relies on the Charlatan background for their characteristics, which is functional but a bit of a shame. As for the apothecary, I don't know about providing an actual mechanical benefit - background features are generally limited to roleplaying benefits.
  • A listing of armor for a steampunk setting, including some new armors. These include the combat robe (a lightweight armored robe for wizards which doesn't require Light Armor proficiency - seems like a cheat to be honest), the assassin outfit (with a Stealth bonus and extra pockets), "gearplate" and "mech" armor (plate armor with some of the disadvantages removed), a buckler (simple and welcome addition), and the "parasol shield" (which collapses into a parasol).
  • A listing of weapons for a steampunk setting, with numerous new additions. These include not only firearms, but also brass knuckles (which add +1 to unarmed damage), a bola, a boomerang, a cane sword, a chain whip, a chainsaw (which jams on 1s and crits on a 19), gun blades and gun axes, and a sawblade launcher. They also (quietly) include a variant whip which can be used to knock enemies prone.
  • A listing of steampunk adventuring gear, including a compass, lighter, camera, and watch. They also list binoculars here, but unfortunately neglected to provide rules.
  • A listing of steampunk tools, including tools for the two backgrounds and investigator's supplies. Shame the latter wasn't tied to an investigator background. (The listing also accidentally duplicates some of the gear from the previous section.)
  • Three new feats: Firearms Expert, which seems fair; Nimble, which boosts your AC when you're lightly or not armored; and Tinkerer, which gives any character the core rock gnome's Tinker feature. Of the three, Nimble seems to have the most general usefulness.

Although some of the mechanics feel slightly un-5E, and there are some minor formatting hiccups, overall this is a worthwhile "booster pack" of material, and not only for steampunk games.

The Darkest Night (5E): A Christmas Adventure

I've been a player and a DM to this adventure. Very easy to get setup, if you have less than 2 hours to prepare a short christmas campaign then this is the one for you. Runs about 2-3 hours depending on player skill.

Gunfighter Class (5E)
by Chris C. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 08/18/2021 06:25:32

Mechanically, the class feels lazy, clunky, and uninspired. A few core features are direct copy/paste from other base PHB classes (e.g. Action Surge, Danger Sense, Foe Slayer etc.) that it feels like a weird mash-up of familiar classes rather than one with its own distinct identity, and the same goes for its subclasses (Cunning Action, Sneak Attack, a renamed Second Wind feature etc.). Speaking of copy/pasting, Freeze (from the Bounty Hunter) and Stun Attack (from the Lone Ranger) work exactly the same except that they inflict different conditions.

No, there isn't a repertoire of trick shot options available for the player to choose, it's just one trick shot, and it can only be used once short rest. At this point, the class is no different than a fighter, really. The Desperado has two features that use a reaction, essentially cannibalizing each other. I don't know why the Ranger's features like Foe Slayer and tracking were included in an Intelligence-based class - what's ironic is that the Dueling fighting style (that you get at the first level) does exactly the same thing as Foe Slayer but it uses Intelligence, essentially making a level-one feature stronger the capstone! It's just ridiculous how messy and illogical the mechanical design is upon scrutiny.

I'm mostly bewildered that this repackaged Fighter-Rogue-Ranger can pass off as a class of its own, in what I had hoped would be a distinct class with unique mechanics.

I could go on, but it's quite evident that not much effort was spared for its mechanical design. The only reason why this product didn't get one-star from me is because the PDF is quite well-designed despite some language errors. IMO, Matt Mercer's Gunslinger (even with its flaws) is far more interesting to play than this version. I sincerely hope that this class receives an overhaul that is worthy of a purchase.

The Seas of Vodari (5E): Swashbucking & Sorcery on the High Seas
by Yann E. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 06/22/2021 10:50:48

My review is based on reading only. I have bought the product in august 2020 when I was looking for another setting that the usual Forgotten Realms.

I liked this product very much, I don't know if I will run adventures in it but I'm impressed by the Quality of the work. The PDF is thorough: you have species, a new class, backgrounds, a full pantheon, a gazetteer of the important kingdoms and a few adventure seeds, you have also new monsters, spell and magic items. The icing on the cake? An introductory adventure with a treasure hunt :).

Clearly it's a very good third-party setting I strongly recommend if you like seafaring swashbuckling adventures!

The Darkest Night (5E): A Christmas Adventure
by Jericho A. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/04/2021 07:13:31

Ran this on a local event by one of my D&D communities a week before Christmas. Some of the players were newbies and they enjoyed the session very much. The module, I feel, provides the backbone of the adventure, but I like to put some personal touches on the story. But nothing tops the ending and the gifts suggested by the module. Some players were getting emotional over the holiday presents. Overall, my players really had fun. Thank you.
