City of Mist: All-Seeing Eye Investigations Starter Set
Publisher: Son of Oak Game Studio

City of Mist is a game that oozes flavor and has the flexibility to satisfy most player palletes. I've found that the starter set does a great job explaining the system mechanics with my appreciattion going to the point-by-point explanation of the character sheet and the sample playthrough to help explain how a typical session might go.

I will say it is a bit odd that there is one pdf file that has the MC (Master of Ceremonies - this iteration of a Game Master) portion added onto the Player portion, almost as if you had two seperate pdfs which are literally stacked on top of each other. Even so, the MC guide has a wealth of information and tips on how to understand and run the system.

One particular ssue has prevented me from giving a full five star review, that unlike the original starter set, there are no print friendly versions of the character sheets provided in the pdf. To print one for player use, printing the full page renders most of the mechanical power tag text quite hard to read, and the amount of pdf manipulating to print the provided sheets into two landscape sheets is currently out of my scope of skill. I would encourage an update where players could have the option to print a more printer friendly copy of the sheets.

To players looking to create their own personal Rifts (player characters) you won't find that information here. That is exclusive to the corebooks, and it doesn't like the company plans on releasing that information officially. Personally, I wish character creation was available freely given the setting and mechanics of the core game are enough to justify the core books value on their own, but it is tediously difficult to walk my online players through character creation.

Time Tracker

Nothing has caused my players to take their time more seriously than actually showing them the progression on a printed out Time Tracker. Its something I bring with me to every game. It has also caused me to think about holidays, and days folks have work off, and the fact that staying up late means waking up late as well.

A supremely useful tool, and I highly suggest printing it out large enough for your players to see, as well as laminating it so it lasts for many games to come.

The Chronodex - Core Set
Publisher: KaiserMakes

All in all, A great resource and product.

The Chronodex is as wonderful as the name is memorable. Each of the sections are organized in a way that one can remove or add additional copies of any section they need. Have an army of unique NPCs? Jus print off more pages. Rather not chart the different regions of your game world? Just switch them out.

The Chronodex also reintroduces some quirky video game aspects that are more for fun and interest. I never thought I'd like to know what my character's official killl count was until I saw the section waiting for my tally marks. And the idea of "Achievements" that the players and characters can earn is a fun idea, regardless of whether you award such meta-behavior.

As I said before, this is a great resource for those who want to be a bit more organized. Or a great treat for the party note-taker, lore-keeper, and general purveyor of important details.

Masks: A New Generation
Publisher: Magpie Games
by A customer [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 04/20/2017 11:01:08

Masks, A New Generation is a Powered by Apocolypse game that really stands on its own. Below are certain aspects I really enjoyed.

Fluidity of Playbooks Masks allows players to build their hero based off templates called playbooks. These playbooks are vague within set archetypes, allowing the creation of characters that can vary wildly in powers and backstory, but still fit within an identity that defines them. Whether you'd like to be the average Joe who's keeping up with powerhouses, or the strained teen trying to keep their normal life and heroic life seperate, you've got a great selection to choose from.

Character Failure = Leveling Up There isn't really a way to "Power game" in Masks, or at least not one that doesn't seem fake. The only way to advance in your power, options, abilities is to fail. For each failure, you tally up until you get to five and then you grow as a character. There's no way around it. It's brilliant really. Imagine a teen superhero that always gets the bad guy, never let's down the hostages, always comes through to save the day. Wouldn't that be boring? Why would that character need to change? By tying failure to growth, even the more most powerful of heroes will be humbled.

Relationships and Influence Another major mechanic of the system is its emphasis on how relationships with adults and other people mold a character's identity. People who you care about, whether for good or bad reasons, will have an impact on you with their words. Believing you're a dark loner will change if the defender of the city takes time to tell you, "You're one heck of a hero." By embracing and rejecting changes, it adds an extra layer of fun and complexity as the players try and figure out "Who is this character?"

This is great game for groups looking to experience the entire teen hero life, and perhaps have some really emotional moments as well if they get invested in the lives of their characters.
