Excellent quality. Realistic women. Not overly grimdark. Good variety of image types. Can't wait to see what's coming!

I used a paper cutter and corner cutter to make this sheet look even more fantastic.

The GameMaster's Apprentice: Base Deck

I love these cards. I don't use them as much as I could. I could use them to replace all my dice, for instance, but I still like rolling dice. I don't use them for randomly generating adventures, but I could. I use them for inspiration, NPC names, and creative prompts, and for that alone, I'm glad I bought them.

As time goes on, I'm using them more and more often. I started bringing them downstairs to use when I play online. I started considering using them to replace dice. I'm very happy with them.

Pregen Characters: High Elf Fighter (5e)
Publisher: Wizards of the Coast
by Jon L. [Verified Purchaser]

Of the pregen fighters WotC made, this one is better than the human. It has more interesting options and is better designed to be more effective in and out of combat. The character seems to be an arrogant high elf "gish" (fighter-mage) using the Eldritch Knight subclass and Sage background. You get to use melee and magic right from level 1.

  • Dex makes a good fighter, and getting to 20 quick is smart. I personally prefer more abjurations over evocations for Eldritch Knight spell choices, but at least you have Shield. I like Thunderwave and Darkness as well. Scorching Ray and Magic Missile aren't good choices IMO. Smart players will swap them out. Perhaps Find Familiar (or Protection from Good/Evil) and Gust of Wind would be better. An Eldritch Knight should be using spells for utility and battlefield control, not damage. You're a fighter. Get a longbow. Two attacks at +9, d8+5 are just about as good as scorching ray's three at +8, 2d6. Even the character's darts (two attacks, +9, d4+5) are only a little worse than Scorching Ray.

  • The character should be fun to roleplay, with that haughty, arrogant "Charisma is my dump stat" elf Sage sneer. It comes through in the character's Flaw, which should earn you a lot of Inspiration, if you play it well. Just criticize EVERYONE and EVERYTHING, often using polysyllabic words to sound smart and educated. It should be a blast! You're basically playing a Dragonlance elf :-)

  • Because they put this pregen out there, WOTC needs to clarify the common question about War Magic and whether you can use the attack before the cantrip. Luckily this build doesn't have Poison Spray. Though it SHOULD. Even if you can't use the attack first, this character could be using War Magic to be attacking and using Poison Spray every round (with forced disadvantage) against tough monsters.

  • Again, these WOTC pregens don't use feats, which is a little annoying, because this character should probably take a feat - War Caster comes to mind because it lets you use your shield and rapier and still cast. (The human fighter DEFINITELY should take a feat, but that's another issue.).

Pregen Characters: Human Fighter (5e)

There are two pregen 5e fighters. This one is built to be a "leader of men" / "great tactician" concept. It uses the stock human and champion fighter, with the Soldier background. The other is a haughty, sneering high elf fighter with the eldritch knight subclass, and is more interesting and more effective than this one.

This fighter is not a very good contribution to the party unless your group is using Basic Rules Only characters, or not using Feats. Here are some of this fighter's drawbacks:

  • Dex is a terrible "dump stat" to take for a fighter. Especially a Champion. 9 Dex means poor Dexterity saves, low initiative, and poor Acrobatics. The Remarkable Athlete class feature is wasted because of the low Dex. If this character's Dex and Int were swapped, it would be better. I get that the idea is to make this character a "leader of men" type with History and Intimidation, with decent Int and good Cha to back them up.

  • At level 10, the character's damage output is low, with two attacks at 1d8+5. Using Splint Mail at level 10 seems odd, since plate would/should be affordable by then. Just using their swords, the elf has better damage output and only 1 lower AC (the elf can also cast Shield to temporarily boost their AC).

World of Darkness: God-Machine Rules Update
Publisher: Onyx Path Publishing
by Jon L. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 05/13/2013 07:12:21

I reviewed the GMC rules update for my GM blog, Run a Game, here:

http://runagame.blogspot.com/2013/05/god-machine-chronicle-system-review.html

Here are some parts of the system I loved:

  • Improved combat system: Starts with declaring intent so not every fight is just a kill-or-be-killed battle to the death; killing is hard
  • "Integrity" is the new morality stat, and it's more of a sanity stat - finally moving away from the V:tM Humanity model from the 90s!
  • The experience point system got a heavy revision. Now XP come mostly from player actions, and the scale is linear (X points, instead of X*[new rating])

The bad...

  • The new social maneuvers system is too much system. It doesn't seem to serve any helpful purpose, and can screw the story up with some too-good or too-bad rolls.
  • Extended actions are still pretty bad. Easy: Just don't use them.
  • Tying experience points to player actions can be rough on wallflower players and puts more demand on the GM to act as a facilitator. Naturally YMMV on this one.

Overall: Great game. See my blog post for more detail on these comments before responding to me here.
