An excellent storybook on immortal souls, memory, and eternal middle management. The different tiers of the cults allow for games at various power levels. Every paragraph was bursting with story hooks. A superb read, and improvement upon 1e. Highly recommend, with gorgeous grayscale art.

Mummy: The Curse wasn't my first Chronicles of Darkness game, but it was the one that finally made me a Chronicles of Darkness fan.

Second Edition is a dense, tightly written book that distills the most evocative aspects of first edition and adds support for new styles of play. As someone who loves first edition, every decision that was made for second edition improved the game without sacrificing any of the awesome parts of 1E.

This is a super interesting game to run and play. It turns a lot of RPG conventions on their head. For example at character creation the Mummies are walking gods, they can resolve almost any problem effortlessly, but they have no personal agenda or real will of their own. Their main goal is to recover their sense of self, but the more that they recover their memories do they really understand how much they gave up to serve their gods.

Running it for a group of experienced players, the phrase "ITS JUST THAT EASY?" came up repeatedly with the same sense of disbelief, as if they were getting away with something. It brought back a sense of wonder as well as many cases of the giggles. Yet the roleplaying never suffered for it. My players got really into the being out of time and seeing a world progress without them aspects of the game. While I got to tell the ENTIRE story I had prepped which never happens.

10/10 would play on either side of the GM Screen.

Like all CoD 2nd editions, this one refines the core concepts of the game, updates the system, and is overall a greater experience. A very flavourful tome that I greatly enjoyed reading.

Mummy the Curse 2e in my opinion is the gem of the chronicles of darkness line. While the other games in the setting are all quite good, Mummy provides a system for storytellers and players to experience a new kind of narrative. One in which time itself is both something to traverse and the enemy as your lifeforce gradually slips away. The juxtaposition of Sekhem and Memory is a brilliant way to explore new themes in roleplay. Many players enjoy playing powerful heroes or creatures and the thrill of having these abilities at your fingertips is exhilarating to explore.

In Mummy the Arisen begin at the peak of their power as if a God and slowly but surely feel it slip away. It's fascinating to watch players get to explore this fantasy and experience the horror of profound loss while at the same time regaining the essential memories that made them who they were in the first place. This second edition perfects the formula in many ways however it gives you so much more within its pages.

Cults, Tombs, Gods of Irem and all of the periphery pieces of this world the Arisen needs are plentiful with varities of not only options, but examples of how to use them in a story. This is by no means a passive compliment. This is a game where you start by playing at God like power, but rely on people like .. Jacob a taxi cab driver in Cincinnati who is a member of your cult and knows the streets in and out. It is very very easy to lose the foundation and ground level perspective in a game that allows you to do as much as Mummy does. The developing team was smart enough to show you how you can still make this game fit a variety of narratives, from heist, to police procedural to the shadow politics of cult vs cult cloak and dagger espionage.

One final piece I found helpful is that there is a mix of a rogues gallery of other immortals you can add in as either antagonists or as player characters for those who wish to play but do something slightly different in the game. I found that to be a very generous and fascinating thing to include and am excited to explore that added facet and perspectives into this narrative.

My professional opinion is that this book deserves at 10/10. From layout, design, content, systems and art work the concept of Mummy the Curse is finally achieved where so many other attempts to make a game about them have fallen short. I hope this game finds itself into the hands of many storytellers and players and will definitely be telling more stories and running more games set in this world, and hopefully will even get to play in it sometime.

Mummy is a strange animal. It has very different starting conceits than most Chronicles of Darkness games. First, when your mummy awakens, it is full of power but very little idea of who they are and why they are awake. They regain more Memory as they remain awake, but they also lose power at the same time. It gives an interesting pressure to each descent where you're racing against the clock of your own power. Also, the more Memory you gain, the more likely you are to develop your own desires and maybe want to rebel against your Judge (the dread power you serve.) However, if you do not do what your Judge wants, they can punish you by taking away some of your Sekhem and/or your Memory. So you can't just flip your Judge a bandaged-wrapped middle digit. You need to figure out a way to bend the rules without breaking them to accomplish any goals other than what your Judge had decreed.

Second, mummies do not experience time in a linear fashion as humans do. They, instead, can wake up (or Descend in game terminology) out of order. Their first Descent might be in 2021, but then their second could be in 1776, then 1942, then 420, then 3442 on Mars. It is an elegant way to get around the whole, "this may be my first time playing this Mummy, but they had to have awoken at some point prior to this, why are they statted as a beginning-level MummY?" question. It also allows you to tell very different stories than are normally possible. You can have a Mummy wake up to find out a Relic has been stolen from a nearby museum. They do their investigation and figure out how the thief broke in and stole it. However, they can't figure out WHERE the thief is. They seem to have just disappeared with the Relic. The Mummy then goes back to sleep and wakes up a few weeks earlier, and using the information they learned on how the thief broke into the museum, they steal the Relic for themselves before the thief can. That's not the kind of story you can tell in most RPGs.

I really loved this splat! The concept is great, and the idea of playing "Doctor Who" as an immortal time-jumping thing is amazing!

Play as Immortal atemporal demigos, with apocalyptic powers but very bad memory. In this book you will find the rules to play Mummies, which are very unique and present many interesting strong points. 1- You are not only immortal but atemporal: play one session in 1980 CE, play the next in 300 BcE. 2- Your powers have an inverted progression: you start as strong as a demigod, and lose your powers with time. When your energy is too weak, go to sleep, then wake up in another era again as a demigod. 3- Create and manage cults: have a group of followers that worship you and do things for you. Some are immortal too and will be with you for eaons (or play as the cultist instead of a mummy). 4- Many of the systems creates stories: want to learn the highest level of a power? Do an investigation to find how is done. These gives tons of tools to the ST to keep players engaged. 5- Tombs: design mini dungeons with everything from relics other can steal to traps.

I knew very little about Mummy before this 2ed book, now is the game I want to ran the most.

this game is not only proof that mummies can be fun, but that an RPG can easily accessible for new players while also having the tools to make a gm very excited. I highly recommend this game to gms who want to get new players into the game easily while also not having to simplify

An amazing addition to your Chronicles collection, and something I look forward to running with earnest. Mummy is not just a game of curses and revenge, as you might expect from a more Universal Pictures view of the monster, but of lost identity and a struggle between maintaining one's self and the ideas of who they are.

Whether you plan on running a short or long game, Mummy's lore and mechanics can support your vision. If you get tired of your current setting, you can completely change it up and use the exact same characters with no problem. I don't think I've played any game which gives the freedom, both mechanically and lore wise, to play with your players as an ST in a long while.
