No acabo de entender lo de enivar una critica, antes de haber leido el manual, pero supongo que se refiere al funcionamiento de la web y el sistema de compra. En ese sentido, encantado con ambas cosas, por su buen funcionamiento y facilidad.

As a rabid Traveller fan, I downloaded the PDF for free as well as the add-ons, always up for another science fiction game.

I am very pleased! The old-style D&D rules pare it down to the basics while containing just enough rules to cover all common situations. The story is very strong, and is an intriguing balance with a "sandbox" game.

My kids are interested in Traveller, but this game is a better introduction to the concept of role-playing. We've spent our first sessions together getting characters together, and the rules encourage us to think of the story behind the character. Now my two daughters (9 and 7) are begging me every other day to get that sector done! Which I am doing now.

I still love Traveller, but I will definitely play this game regularly. If we all have fun, I'll be purchasing every PDF Sine Nomine Publishing produces for this game!

This is my first Print on Demand product from RPGNOW. I have to say that the print quality of Stars Without Number has really flattered the product well. I'm immensely pleased.

The material included in the rpg is very good, all in one book with plenty of material to run a whole campaign. Great purchase!

I am absurdly pleased with this game. It manages to blend the basics of classic D&D with a few bolt-ons reminiscent of Traveller, and it makes it all seems very, very easy.

What really impressed me in SWN is how customizable it is without complexity. Those three basic classes expand in many different directions with the backgrounds and training packages thrown into the mix. Faction rules and the like illustrate SWN is not blind to effective, streamlined modern RPG design. And the starship combat rules are simple and make perfect sense. Building a starship is even more fun, with a really basic but solid design platform.

There are many excellent space and sci-fi games out there, but SWN needs to be in that discussion.

It hardly seems necessary to add more praise to Stars Without Number but I was so blown away by this book that I feel I need to at least let it be known. SwN manages to blend old school aesthetics and rules with a modern sense of science fiction in to an incredibly accessible and playable package. Giving it away free is a smart move; I immediately purchased the hard cover edition through the POD service and am already planning to make this my new go-to system for SF gaming. Stuff like this is really showing just how relevant indie game publishers are today.

Rules: simple but efficient; it includes a skill system, level-based advancement, career packages, streamlined combat and a plethora of useful GM tools and rules for world, creature and adventure design.

Presentation: clean and easy to read, nicely illustrated with evocative pictures that add rather than detract from the product.

Usefulness: extremely; I am already planning to use this book, a lot. It's everything you need for old school SF gaming under one cover.

Overall: 5 out of 5.

This is an amazing game. The rules are clear, and the reason for each one is given, and if you don't like a particular element, it's easy to change a given rule or setting element without causing any trouble. The planet, star system, faction, and adventure generation is absolutely fantastic. It gives all the detail you need while still focusing on giving tons of great plot hooks and adventure elements.

That this game is free is just amazing, it's definitely worth a look if you even vaguely enjoy sci-fi or old school gaming. If you love either or both, you'll certainly also love this game.

I have no idea why this is free. Its excellent. The mechanics are simple yet elegant, and psionic powers and weapons are particularly cool. If I had a criticism, it would be that I wish it had a single well-defined setting rather than leaving that work upt to the GM. One of the most beautiful covers of all time. I would have happily paid $20 or more for this game. Currently my favorite sci-fi RPG.

I can only add to the praise of this very fine roleplaying game.

After I've had a thorough look at the free PDF version, the quality of SWN was so good, that I've ordered the hardcover edition via RPGnow's Now in Print PoD service.

Yesterday the beautiful hardcover of SWN arrived and I am even more enthusiastic about it.

I heartily recommend SWN to anyone with an interest in a product that combines the strengths (but not the weaknesses!) of old, tried and true rpg-mechanics with new, fresh features (tags, factions, etc.) in a very userfriendly way.

The design notes chapter alone gives much insight into how to adapt SWN to your own individual style of play. No need to work through endless "tapestries" of threads at old-school forums to gain some tips on how to customize a game based upon old D&D-like rules-mechanics without breaking it.

So get the PDF and have a look for yourself!

And if you like it, get the hardcover, because it is beautiful and practical.

(And: I REALLY LIKE the PoD option RPGnow offers. The quality of the hardcover book is quite good and well worth it's price. I wish there'd be more (especially older, out of print) products available for Now in Print! )

I have not been so pleased with a Science Fiction game since I picked up Traveller in 1977, everything you need to play is in this book. My group started playing about a month ago and are really pleased.

I stumbled upon this book by accident, purchasing it on a whim. I am glad I did.

A superb addition to the sci-fi genre of RPGs. For ages I have been looking for a sci-fi RGP that caught my imagination. Many came close, but this is the first to meet the grade. By far the best sci-fi RPG I have read, and with a price tag that cannot be argued against.

Inside Stars Without Number you will find a complete RPG, from character creation, to guidance for the GM, and a ready made sector of space ready for a group to start playing “out of the box”. The default setting is well thought out and written, giving the GM and players a believable background against which to set their adventures. Humanity is recovering from a galactic disaster referred to as “the scream”, seeking to recapture the lost wonders of the previous golden age. This gives the gaming group the perfect setting for exploring abandoned worlds, encountering primitive cultures, fighting off space pirates, and rediscovering lost technological artifacts. Even if the GM does not like the rules, the setting is by itself a good enough reason for purchasing this book.

As far as the rules are considered, they are based on the principles of the original “basic” Dungeons & Dragons. Stars Without Number is simple to follow and open enough for any Games Master to make their own, that can be learnt within moments, and entertain for years. This quite simply has the charm and simplicity of the game that many of us cut our teeth on.

Though there are only a dozen or so alien critters in this book (I hear you all cry “we need more than that”), the book provides full guidance and support for creating countless alien creatures, both sentient and animal. And if this was not enough, the old-school style of the rules makes it compatible with many of the other old-school RPGs out on the market. Want to land your spacecraft on a world where dragons are real, simply pick up a copy of the appropriate old-school RPG, and use the creature will little or no work to convert it across.

Starships and space combat are both handled very well. An area a lot of sci-fi RPGs tend to fall down, making the whole business to complex or simple as they try to balance fun against realism. Stars Without Number balances this well. Likewise, the inclusion of rules for Factions is an interesting way to deal with the many organizations (from government bodies, to fanatical cults) the players will encounter as they travel the space-lanes. The rules for factions are geared to enable the players to form factions of their own as they gain levels, forming a parallel to the old-school fantasy RPG equivalent of creating strongholds and amassing followers.

Another great strength for this game is the Designer’s Notes section of the book, which provides advice on why the rules where written the way they were, how they can be changed, and what possible effects changes could make to game balance. This is an invaluable tool to any GM wishing to expand the game with their own ideas of a setting.

At the moment there are only two books for this RPG. The core rule book Stars Without Number, and an adventure called Hard Light. After reading this book, I am looking forward to reading Hard Light, and hope that the authors continue to support this RPG with future adventures and supplements. I also hope that Sine Nomine Publishing seriously consider publishing a printed version of this book. There are plenty of “Print to Order” publishers that other old-school RPGs have been released through. I would love to see a properly bound version of this book sitting on the shelf at home. (Please do consider it).

I have been contemplating writing a sci-fi RPG of my own for a couple of years now. However, Stars Without Number provides everything I wanted in a sci-fi RPG. I am itching to get a gaming group together and start playing.

A superb product. Please keep up the good work.

I've been using Drivethru for years and I have to say this is the best find I've ever seen here, and it's free! I'm not one for retrogaming, and I abandoned D&D years ago, however this is has a lovely feel to it and has me aching to Gm it. The rules are well written, and well thought out, I particularly enjoy the system/planet creation rules and I fully intend to incorporate the faction rules into my games. I'll certainly be keeping an eye out for other Sine Nomine games based on this RPG.

The reviews this product has already received are so well written, I hardly think I have much to add. As a scifi enthusiast, I'm always on the lookout for good scifi games. This one has shown itself to be a solid entry. I love the setting. It's interesting and has multiple possibilities for exploration and expansion. I'm looking forward to sitting down with a group to this game.

For me, one of the wonderful benefits of the OSR has been some great efforts in extending it to the sci-fi genre. "Exonauts!", "Terminal Space", and the rebirth of "Starships & Spacemen" have all been welcome additions to my library and game sessions. At the same time, however, none have really been enough to take a substantial share of my time from my favorite SF RPGs such as "Thousand Suns", "Diaspora" and "Traveller".

And then, seemingly out of nowhere, comes "Stars Without Number", and it appears I will have to make room for one more. In fact, I could see how SWN may very well supplant one or two of my favorites entirely.

With no disrespect intended towards other works and authors, I have to say that through SWN, Kevin Crawford has created an absolutely epic work here. In the same way that "Lamentations of the Flame Princess" turned OD&D up to 11, SWN does the same with the idea of an OSR SFRPG. SWN is a well executed labor of love that, in 210 pages, gives a GM and Players everything (and more!) they would need to build a fascinating, long running sandbox-style campaign that could run for ages. And because of its OD&D simplicity, it could just as easily be used to run a quick and dirty adventure (including character generation) in a single evening. SWN is truly simple, but has the capability to be deep. If you're an old-school group who ever wanted to give something like Traveller a try, but preferred to stick with the system that you know and love, this game is for you.

Kevin's writing is crisp and direct, layout is clean and the book is well-edited. Presentation is excellent, though I've seen these SF clipart graphics before. This is a game worthy of its own art, someday. The PDF is well-bookmarked (THANK YOU!) and includes a Table of Contents and a complete index. Record sheets for everything from the characters and their starships to sector map, planet record, adventure sheets and alien records are included. The number and quality of resources is mind-boggling and suitable for almost any SF game: adventure seeds, NPCs, random tables for religion, politics and architecture, proper names in 8 languages (!), Designer Notes to guide GM customization, starship creation, world generation, alien creation and the list goes on and on. I would almost say that this is a more complete game than the original Classic Traveller with a lower learning curve.

More than that, this game feels more open (to me) than CT and many other games which seem to have military, trade or Star Trek style adventuring baked into them. I prefer to play adventures in universes that resemble those of Asimov and Poul Anderson, and although "Thousand Suns" has been my goto game for this for years, I find the elegant simplicity and sandbox friendly nature of SWN to be a strong draw for my attention for the foreseeable future.

Also worth noting is the adventure module "Hard Light", released separately, which is well worth the low cost and another great example of this game's old school sensibilities. If these are published in print, I will definitely be purchasing it and I look forward to more from Sine Nomine Publishing.

When I first saw this product, I was skeptical.

It's wroth a read, I'll give it that. What it lacks in classes (with only three, though admittedly you can do a fair amount of variation between the three), it makes up for in being fully-functional in the rules department.

I don't think I've seen some of the features in this free game in three or four expensive games combined. It may be simple, but there's still a lot to do in it, so if you wanna play a game quick, and be able to come back to it the next week, choose Stars Without Number!
