Something Strange is a very solid offering if you are looking for Urban Fantasy and/or light horror/suspense. Mechanically, a host of well thought out and playtested options are provided across archetypes, talents, gears, adversaries, and more. As an earlier Genesys Foundry offering, some aspects are more clunky than others, but overall it is fairly comprehensive and robust. Archetypes cover your fantastical bases, such as werewolves, vampires, goblins, trolls, sirens, and many others. Adversaries likewise provide a nice assortment of urban fantasy staples, like mothman, sasquatch, and others. I think Something Strange is ideal if you want to run a Fringe or X-Files style eerie investigative game.

In terms of setting and lore content, Something Strange is very light on this, and you will need to actively fill in a lot of blank space. This is intentional by the other author, but is definitely very apparent if you are hoping to dive into a fully fleshed out world and setting. Nevertheless, what is in there, even from the mechanical side of things, very much pushes the imagination to fill in the blanks, so this is not as big of a deficiency as it may at first seem.

Fun subsystems that I just take around with me everywhere (Particularly the magic implement creation system) and the Archetypes combined with the Core Rule Book has become my core set of Archetypes to use when running games.

there are alot of urban fantasy settings available these days but this is the one to me that feels like it works along side the mechanics and strengths of Genesys without getting bogged down with too many extra systems or hacking.

10/10

Something Strange was one of the first products offered on the Foundry, which means that Scott was both picked by Fantasy Flight to have that opportunity and those first titles likely went through some kind of screening, even if minor, to be a flagship launch. Even if the above turns out not to be true, you'd never know it, because Something Strange is an extremly well thought out and put together setting. It fills a nice niche that is touched on without much fan fare in the core optional systems, and its different sub-genres it covers all blend nicely. If you like the old vampire, werewolf, mage, changeling, and hunter games then this is the perfect Genesys supplement. Whether you want to be normie investigators, hunters, or those touched/infuenced by the supernatural themselves, this supplement has a little of everything. Whats more, and most important, its clear that this is a creation of passion by the author, because he is constantly updating it, and even adding in new content that he thought the book needed but wasnt ready yet. The recent Fey-Touched update could EASILY have been small 2.00 supplement and everyone who bought this would have bought it, but it was supposed to be in the book (but got cut for time) so he added it in later. Thats the kind of content and dedication to his project you can expect here.

As other reviews have said this is a toolkit rather than a setting, and that's exactly what I was looking for.

The careers here are my favourite I've seen in a Genesys book, and the expanded talents for supernatural creatures are everything you could need.

I was so impressed with this. As a final bonus: it's a breezy and easy read, getting across a lot of useful rules stuff in an entertaining and approachable way.

Less of a setting, more a toolkit to do just about any flavor of urban fantasy. It leans more in on horror, but you could easily use this to kick off any story that blends modern day and fantasy elements. The layout and presentation are top notch, and in general a great resource on top of what Genesys already comes with.

A very high quality, well designed and well thought out supplement for the Genesys RPG system. I was prepared to do a fair bit of research and writing to hack together an urban fantasy/modern horror conversion when someone pointed me to Scott's Something Strange setting book - and it's perfect! It literally handled everything I needed it to and added a number of things I hadn't even considered yet. Easily bridges the gaps that exist in the Genesys core rulebook while giving players the flexibility to play the game in the tone and style they needed.

It's ideal for cherry-picking the aspects you need for your campaign and not requiring the use of anything else, but also leaves the door open for expansion (for example - I don't need to figure out what happens if one of my players is bit by a werewolf - there are rules for that now!).

The design and layout is professional grade and at 68 pages you get a lot of bang for your buck. Not only that, but Scott is extremely responsive on the Facebook Genesys and Discord groups that helps admin, and has put out a number of free or low-priced additions and updates to the book.

The something strange setting is great supplement for Genesys wether to play in a modern setting or use as cool tools and inspiration for other games. Set in a supernatural version of our own modern world it gives you simple but powerfull tools tell a varity of stories.

Its well designed and has excellent production quality.

Its does not feature alot of lore and story but explains elements of supernatural to be placed in a modern world. The book does explain the common types of supernatural elements of vampire, werewolfes and magi and the adversary section gives great inspiration for setting up plots and encounters drawing alot from urban legends and fantasy.

I can highly recommend the Something Strange setting for Genesys

Something Strange is a supplement for FFG's Genesys RPG, released under their Genesis Foundry licence. The author has categorized it as a Modern Horror Setting, but the supplement will work equally well for Urban Fantasy.

The supplement only spends a few pages detailing the "Setting", but that's because it doesn't need to. Set in the modern world, but with a supernatural twist, there isn't the need for a lot of exposition detailing the world. In fact, that very lack of detail gives the GM and Players using Something Strange the freedom to tailor the setting to their tastes. Without naming specifics, this could be used to emulate any number of book series, movies, or television series with very little effort.

There are a number of new Archetypes and Careers that are suited to the genre, but that could be used in any Genesys game, along with a large selection of new Talents.

Additionally, a few new rules help emphasize the theme, but they are simple and therefore should be easy to implement.

Something Strange has a small but useful section devoted to equipment and vehicles that should cover most situations.

The Adversary section covers some expected monsters (Vampires, Werewolves), but also some unusual choices (Chupacabra, Moth Man), and even named NPCs with a brief backstory ready to drop into a campaign. One of the strengths of Genesys is the ability to easily re-skin Adversaries, meaning a GM can use these in any game (or use Adversaries from any other Genesys product for a Something Strange campaign).

I purposely left one aspect of the supplement to the end of my review: Vampires and Werewolves. The author devised a brilliant way to handle these "monsters" as player characters. He uses Talents to represent them and their abilities, allowing a PC to become either a Vampire or a Werewolf (both not both) after character creation (although they could also spend some of their initial XP to start as one), and then grow in power over the course of a campaign.

It also means that an all Vampire or an all Werewolf campaign could be run using Something Strange, and the characters can all be unique (not to mention adding a twist to the default "Modern Horror" premise).

All in all, this is a welcome addition to the Genesys system!

This setting is the best Modern Horror supplement you can hope for. It gives lots of options: gear, talents, vehicles, and adversaries adapted for the genre. It's deep enough to feel unique in the available options while being generic enough to adapt it to your favorite modern horror existing IP. I know a friend of mine who would love to to play a narrative Supernatural (the TV show) RPG and this setting is perfect for that.

I had the chance to contribute to the Werewolf and Vampire talents by working along with Scott and I must say that they ended up pretty great. Using the core rules, Scott achieved to offer a unique and great way to make character with such supernatural abilities.

Great book Scott!
